It's just that there is a bigger future in streaming.

Back on track, I just watched The Matrix again and it truly is my favorite 4k release. I may be in a small minority, but I think this transfer is flawless. About as pitch as it can get. Worth every penny paid.

No-one said it wasn't the big dog. It's irrevocably changed the landscape for sure, but physical media is still worth billions - literally - and with the infrastructure for replication, distribution etc still firmly in place then it will continue to hang on until the bitter end. But seeing as vinyl has made one hell of a comeback then I'm not sure that watching movies on a disc will ever go out of fashion completely, not in my lifetime anyway.

There is already a model for physical media targeted to small markets. See the Elusive Disc website. Or Music Direct. SACDs and vinyl records mastered by Kevin Gray and others for audiophiles. These two sites are merely examples. There's an entire cottage industry for the most informed audiophiles. Tens of thousands in gear is a waste without proper mastering work from original source tapes.
Of course, film lovers already have WAC and Criterion, etc. Hopefully, 4K will be adopted. Finally, why can't we next have a physical hard drive format? A small stick with all the movie files on it? Optical disc isn't used at commercial theaters. We should get what they have after 4K Blu! |

Was going to change my sig to call these people out, but I think I'll just block all of them instantly from now on. You have absolutely no reason to exist on here if you're going to question, no more like doomsay, disc media or the blu-ray format. |

Digital files make sense for music recordings and I've gone down that road several years ago. Audiophile "computer" front ends have come a long way in past couple years. No doubt physical disc will find an end point. Make sense to me that our next consumer movie format will be a small, high capacity storage device similar to what commercial theaters get. Streaming can exist alongside. |

Not only that, I love movie packaging with slips, steelbooks and all that. I love collecting those films and shows I enjoy. And absolutely yes, it can all co-exist alongside one another without feeling threatened. ![]() |
