Yes, fair enough. I still think both are somewhat equally flawed.

Note that I'm also not outraged. As usual I just point things out.

But I cannot help but think that (as usual) flaws on US releases get less outrage here, than the same issue would, if it wasn't the US release. Which isn't a US problem, but a general one. And I usually find myself fighting all the battles, because I'm not limiting myself to certain regions. And I will never get the bias.

In Halloween's case it starts out at 2.35 and then ends up at 2.39, it's such a tiny difference (and both within spec for 2x anamorphic)
It's tiny depending on screen size. Halloween is also just lucky IMO, because you don't notice the switch due to the dark image. Which is good! If it wasn't for Halloween's dark scenes, I'm sure more people would've noticed.

I hate to come out of my corner swinging because the world already has enough hatefulness and vitriol as it is, but this may win the prize for the flat-out stupidest thing I’ve ever read on these boards. So what you’re saying is anything goes between those two black bars and it’s no harm, no foul?! They could’ve zoomed in until only Jamie Lee Curtis’s tear duct took up the entire frame and that would be right as rain as long as those black bars measure precisely for a 2.35:1 image and not a pixel more?!

Yeah, that's exactly what I said.

EDIT:
[Show spoiler]And for those who don't speak sarcasm... What I actually said is that people appear to make a big deal out of this:
https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...122903&i=2&l=0

when the difference on the Lionsgate in itself is actually bigger due to the wrong aspect ratio.

But yeah, my comment is the flat-out stupidest thing I’ve ever read on these boards...

Yes, you're quite the iconoclast? If I see some shit then I damned well call it out, doesn't who/what/when/where did it, but even I have limits. There are wars, there are battles, there are skirmishes, this Halloween AR issue barely rates as a fart in the bathtub IMO.

As I stated in the other thread: You're missing the point completely.

Yes, it is a fart in the bathtub. I didn't even notice it first @caps - someone else did. I said myself that it's a non-issue. But so is the framing and (most likely) the compression of the Concorde. And the same goes for a lot of things that you do point out for that matter.

I just pointed it out. Should I refrain from doing so instead? I have the German Dredd pre-ordered because the price dropped. Comparing it properly will most likley require some pixel-peeping. Should I not do so?

Truth is, I guess I need at least a little break from pq related movie discussions and go back to just watching/enjoing the movies instead again.

I love this defense. What you actually said was what I actually copied in my reply. Those were your words. That the differential of the black bars between 2.35 and 2.39 was a “much bigger issue” than the Concorde zooming the entire frame so that all four margins spill off the screen. And that is a staggeringly dimwitted thing to say.

What I said intially resp. what you quoted is exactly the same thing I said in my "defense". You're just overlooking two details in regard to my initial comment:

1)
Quote:
much bigger issue than a slightly zoomed/cropped picture
The bold part is key here in particular. And yes, I do consider switching black bars a bigger issue than a slightly zoomed picture. That's just me and might be my OCD and you may beg to differ.

2)
The fact that the Concorde is actually more zoomed in the later caps is not just the result of the black bars issue of the Lionsgate, is sth grodd brought to my attention only afterwards. And I agreed. My initial "much bigger issue" didn't apply anymore.

So maybe pay a little more attention before calling people's comments flat out stupid. I'm certified not stupid, you know.

Sure you pointed it out, but given the amount of sweary asterisks in that other post of yours above you'll forgive me for saying that you seem to be a fraction less dispassionate about it than you're claiming to be. Not that you're not allowed to get het up about something, I do it quite regularly when I get a bee in my bonnet. But the reason why it doesn't burn me out is that I OWN that shit, I don't start swearing all over the place and then come back with "What, me? All I did was point it out, guv'nor!".

You're a VERY valued member here and to UHD in general, your 4K comparisons are the best around, but that whole "bias" thing sounds like you're reading a bit more into people's responses than you should be, said the bloke who's possibly reading more into your response than he should be. If more comments are taken at face value and not psycho-analysed, said the bloke doing the psycho-analysing, you might be better off. Just a suggestion, not a piss-take or mockery of any kind.

Yeah, you know every site has something like this happen... I remember over on avsforum, old Blufan1, about fifteen years ago... One night, he finished a review, and he excused himself from the thread. He went out to the garage, and got himself a light meter . Then he went back into the house, kissed his wife and his two children goodbye, and then he proceeded to...

Such a GREAT BEER and CIGARETTE MOVIE if I do say so myself.

The acting on this for such a unseasoned CAST is delightful for this genre.

I have more than 1 4K tv and the Dolby Vision was nice on that cheap set too. But HDR is perfectly fine here.

Despite its various flaws that have already been well-explored in this thread, I am still very impressed with the US 4k UHD's video presentation. On my equipment, it represents a significant upgrade over the 35th Anny BD, in terms of clarity, detail, grain levels and resolution, color timing, and consistency in the depth and warmth of the color palette throughout the film. It is easily the best I have ever seen this film look. I can view the entire presentation without being distracted by overblown, bright yellowish contrasting (the 2007 bd), and I find myself just enjoying the film and its hdr enhanced detail and saturation.

While the 35th BD is a great transfer in many ways, I find the disparity in its color grading across various scenes to be very distracting. Some scenes look somewhat natural and pleasing, while other scenes look excessively drained and desaturated to the point of bleached out. I find the film less immersive when I am shocked out of the movie's content by these few overly bleak and almost out-of-place frames. I do NOT find the 4k to be darker than the 35th Anny BD on my equipment. The 4k actually looks richer and warmer, having more brown tones than taupes and greys in some frames, and the details even in darker scenes are easier for me to see clearly than on the 35th Anny BD.

The 4k UHD has become my go-to disc for this movie, for the time being. It doesn't hurt that I scored this disc on Amazon for $11 back around Christmas 2018.

Agreed. <sad face> If the UHD had the original mono, it would be my go-to. Glad the 35th Anniversary BD (or rather, the one from the boxed set WITH the original mono, which I bought off eBay) is allllmost as good-looking... especially after I tweak my projector's color saturation settings... AND has the mono. That's m'baby. But I have the UHD anyway, since this movie's in my personal Top Five faves of all time, and it does look amazing... and I can't NOT have it.
