Seeing "widescreen" on the bottom of that Laserdisc cover reminded me of an article, now deleted, in which a Superman fan recalled one brief, specific moment that didn't make sense to him until he upgraded his pan and scan tape to a widescreen DVD:
When civilians cheer Superman's rescue of Lois after her fall from the Daily Planet roof, he could hear a woman reporting on it, but he never saw her on the tape. He made it sound like a revelation when he finally saw her on the DVD, and realized that the version he grew up watching cropped her out.

Yeah, just like the sight gag in Ghostbusters where Egon is feeding Venkman the numbers to tell the hotel manager.

When I was a kid I thought the shift from pan and scan to letterboxed for the closing shot/end credits of Raiders of the Lost Ark was just part of the effect to make the warehouse look bigger.

Well for us in PAL region everything was time compressed until 2007

TV broadcasts are still @ 25 fps/50i

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question but here it goes.

Is Mike Clark, the guy who wrote the VHS review for Superman: The Movie, still alive today?

If he's Movie Mike the noted reviewer he sadly passed a few back.

I don't know if anyone has commented it yet, but both 4K releases seem to have the same encode:

Well, this is Warner, the same studio who just unconverted most of their SD catalog titles to HD during the Blu-ray era. One shouldn't expect them to improve what they got, unless there's a huge error that they can conceive.

Yes and a poor one at that!
They also removed the great surround track that was on the 2018 disc.

We know, they just swapped out the 70mm 5.1 for the shitty old 35mm 2.0 when authoring the new disc.

I meant visually, just the encoding itself. I'm aware of those audio changes. Now let's hope that rumored remaster eventually comes out

Maybe they’ll remaster the movie with the Special Edition included. Based on customer feedback maybe they’d also restore the 5.1 track from the first disc and fix the HDR grade.

Yeah, and maybe I’m a Chinese jet pilot.

Give it 4 years and maybe they will get it right for the 50th.

The 5.1 track from the first disc (apparently sourced from the Dolby 6-track split surround for 70mm prints) goes with the theatrical cut. I'd like for that updated to a lossless format.

The Atmos track (Michael Thau remix) goes with the Special Edition. I'm happy without either of those. What I'd really like is the edit that the final music score was recorded to. It's such a great score, and I find it disappointing that it ended up so butchered in the theatrical edit. While the extended TV cut includes more of it, it's not really right there either.

The HDR grade and mastering could certainly use some improvement.

the extended tv cut has a much better scan than the theatrical version, be it on uhd bluray or normal bluray, even if they had just uspcaled that it would have been better than this. couple it with the 70mm trackand we would have been so happy

So is the new Superman 4k disc from a few years ago not the definitive edition, then? Messed up HDR and audio it seems, from reading the above replies...

Correct it sucks!

The DC cut on Blu is probably the best presentation of the semi normal version of the film. The visuals of the 3hr cut are nicest but it is the overly long version and in mono except the fudged opening title. The Theatrical on blu is passable but his suit is slightly more cyan. The 4k is just wrong visually but the 4k 2018 disc has the nice early 70mm surround mix.

So take your pick what is important.

WB need to get their stuff together and remaster this properly for both the Theatrical and DC cuts in 4k.
Whilst they are doing that Warner Archive can release the TV cuts of II and III.
