The blowback on the poor reviews is bad enough that the number of people on this website with Forrest Gump in their collections (from preorders or want-to-buy) actually dropped from last week to this week.
While we are a small part of the 4k buying public, reviews do seem to have an effect. Conversely, to keep this about Tom Hanks movies, Saving Private Ryan got great reviews and it's going gangbusters for a catalog title. |

It's a shame they didn't do a better job with this, great movie and I feel the UHD transfer could have been incredible too.

Just delivered by Best Buy today. Sold my BD and while back but guess I'll learn from that mistake. Will check it out this evening since and see how bad this can be.

Spent about 30 minutes earlier today viewing select scenes. I'm going to watch this all the way through tonight. Now my opinion may or could change but I will say this for now:
Martin Liebman reviewed Grease 4K and gave the video quality for that review a glowing 4.5. And I think at this point enough posters have viewed that disc or at least scene some form of screen captures to know how heavy handed the noise reduction was with that title. Here the same reviewer gives Forrest Gump a 2.5. And I got to say that from the limited scenes I did spot check the NR did not look as heavy handed as Grease. This did not look like a T2 or those several shots in Batman Begins. In fact it look closer to maybe what we see on Nolan's WB titles. Maybe a bit more aggressive. Texture and detail looked decent enough. Going to give this a full view in a couple of hours. |

I watched this tonight and I didn't have the heart to watch it in its entirety. So after awhile I just started going from scene to scene, back and forth. Lots and lots of DNR here. Colors just look washed out and drab. Black crush in some scenes. Just disappointing overall. There were some scenes that looked decent, but as soon as you get one that's decent you'll get a DNR mess right after, or some black crush(look at the scene at 2:08:01). I didn't have to A/B it with the Blu-ray to know the Blu-ray is better. I watched it around Christmas time with the same TV and I prefer the Blu.

Just finished watching it. Also A/B with the BD.
So lets get the obvious issue out the way. Noise Reduction. Now unlike Martins review and the poster above me this is not a "lots and lots of DNR mess". I stand by my early observations in that this seems to be filtered to a bit more agressive degree the the WB Nolan titles. Grease Part deux this is not though. So how Martin scored that title with a 4.5? There still a good amount of detail and textures in clothing and faces. Also traced mild sharpening. What it does have in common with Grease and even BB is that from scene to scene the filtering fluctuates. It's more agressive from one scene to less filtered and more filmic the next. After comparing it to it's BD counter part colors are far more richly saturated. Skin tones take on a natural neutral shade as opposed to the orange, pale, or sometimes red sun burned looking shades of colors on the BD. Despite the filtering there is still a noticable uptick in detail. Highlights are no longer blown out. Looking at the windows behind the beds when Gump is brought in with ice cream next to Lieutenant Dan. I did not detect black crush. Overall I'd personally give the disc a 3:75-4/5. I believe we all expect better on this format however this disc is still an overall solid upgrade over the existing BD. |

It's a 100GB disc from what I can tell. One light ring, two dark rings.
I watched the remaining scenes that I didn't see last night. Unfortunately, I'm still disappointed in this disc.Just to clarify, IMO there are scenes that look really good and even seem lush and saturated, like when Lieutenant Dan jumps into the river and makes peace with God, or some of the running scenes. But a lot of the movie lacks vibrancy, like the color is just muted/off. As far as the DNR, yes there is a lot of it, more than I prefer. Is it on the DNR botch level of T2, Grease, or Batman Begins? No,but it's still unnecessary IMO. As far as black crush it's there. Not in every dark scene, because some of the Vietnam stuff had good shadow detail. But the scene I mentioned in my post and a few others were crushed. I've seen worse on that front though. I love this movie and wish it was better handled. It's definitely not the worst transfer I've ever seen (T2, 3:10 to Yuma) but it's incredibly inconsistent, and with the amount of DNR, it borders on bad at times. It should look better, I want it to look better. But hey its just my opinion, take it for what it's worth, YMMV. |

Don't buy this garbage. WE NEED to start voting with wallets if you want anything changed. Every person that goes 'oh I just need it' YOU are the people responsible more and more for letting it go on this long. They do listen when people get vocal enough. I honestly think it is time to get vocal about this.
I am guilty too I bought Batman Begins, but at this point we really need to act together to tell them we don't want this shit. I am increasingly more serious about this because these transfers are getting ****ing lazy. This is not okay. |
