They didn't even nominate Waltz With Bashir....neither one of them. Awful! And every time there's a Pixar movie it almost always wins. One of the Oscar bloggers was afraid to watch Princess Kaguya because it had princess in the title. That's probably indicative of how other people, particularly voters, might feel with no knowledge whatsoever and points to how the Japanese films really need to be campaigned for a year to have a chance (i.e. Spirited Away). Too bad, really, the animation craft for that film is exemplary...and we all know hime does not mean "princess" in the American-Disney sense.
Waltz with Bashir was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe award...it was in the foreign film category, not animation, but that was just discussed a few posts earlier...

Yes, I saw that video a few months ago I believe on YT - pretty cool to have a bird actually enjoy singing Totoro - I wonder if it watches the movie with it's owner and sings along with it then, lol...

I hear you train them by whistling the song at them a lot and eventually they'll imitate you. There's one that does the choccobo theme from ff7 that's my favourite

I had to hunt it down for a while, and ended up getting it on eBay. It was still in the original packing, never hung, with the Ghibli certificate and all.

Is this a Ghibli Museum reproduction cel or an original one?

Not an original, but not a Ghibli museum one either. Studio Ghibli did four official reproductions at one point (Totoro, Kiki's, and two for Mononoke), and they came with certificates hand-signed by the president of Ghibli which state Miyazaki was personally involved in the reproduction. It's full size, where a lot of the Ghibli museum reproductions are smaller. Though I'm sure they're amazing, and I'd love to have some of them too.

Cool! They're pretty rare now, I've seen a girl selling one recently from her personal collection, most of the museum ones are full size but there are half as many half sized ones available in the museum too. I believe the reason Miyazaki is involved on this one is because it's not a shot from the film so he most likely had a hand in or drew the composition. I think the same shot is used for DVD and book covers. It's a really nice item

Speaking of compositions the porco museum cel I have isn't one directly from the film (technically) it's porco and Curtis talking at the bar in the hotel adriano, and whilst porcos frame and Curtis's frame poses are taken directly from the film they're taken from two separate moments seconds apart within the same scene

I'm pretty sure similar applies to my Ponyo one: Sosuke driving the miniature boat and Ponyo standing on top, arms astride.

Yes, the document that came with my cel states that Miyazaki actually drew the image for this cel, which is pretty cool. And, yes, that image was reused for other art.

And thanks for the info on the museum cels. That's cool that you have a Porco cel.

Is ponyo one of the bigger ones? Il check mine out when I get home, if my porco one is smaller than original it won't be much as a standard cel is only like 13"

Man, I'd love to visit the museum some day, but I'm afraid I'd spend a fortune in the gift shop.

oh i get it you mean the composition rather than the size of the cel, i didn't realise it til i tried to screen shot the same frame from the film.

At least i know my mononoke cel i bought recently is a shot from the film as its a production cel of Eboshi

And I sure hope it was your dirty clothes you posted back home, and not any of your valuable Ghibli collectables...
