Well, they destroyed Cannon Films doing it so a Superman V was out of the question anyway. At least at the time.

I dragged my friends to see it and they were wary about seeing stuff with me afterwards for a while. Earlier in the year I also had insisted on seeing Raising Arizona and a lot of them didn't "get" the movie. I could understand that. The we all saw Predator and had a great time. But there really wasn't any excuses I could make for Superman IV.

Old enough to drive myself to the theater and gauge if I wanted to eat the cost of a ticket

The great thing about Sup IV is that it makes Supergirl look good by comparison.

No one who was working on Superman IV considered it "awful", Christopher Reeve in December 1986 said that he thinks they are close to making the best Superman movie.
It was during the editing process where some lost confidence. Christopher Reeve said to Jon Cryer sometime in 1987 that the final product was going to be bad because he saw Cannon make an edit that "makes no sense".
Also, something crazy is that the scenes with Nuclear Man 1 got removed 2 weeks before the the movie's premiere. Nuke 1's actor Clive Mantle confirmed this, which may explain why the movie got delayed from July 17th to the 24th.

Lacy was not meant to be in space. If you check Superman IV's script or the movie's comic book adaptation you will see that those parts where she is rescued from Nuclear Man 2 actually happen on Earth.
No idea why during the editing process they put space as the background in those blue screen shots with Lacy, maybe the editing was rushed (which could explain why Nuclear Man 1's scenes got removed 2 weeks before the movie released).

That's the complete opposite of what's reported in Jake Rossen's (highly recommended) SUPERMAN VS. HOLLYWOOD book, where he specifically mentions the movie was "crippled from the outset." He wrote that Reeve tried hard in his performance and his 2nd unit directing, but said the writing was on the wall that it was going to be lousy and it was evident from the start. Reeve took Cryer aside and told him "this movie is going to be terrible" during filming when they were together, not later on during post-production as you write.

As far as what Reeve said in 1986, every star does that to sell their new movie. Reeve said whatever he needed to in pre-release publicity to generate hype, but that's no indication that they all didn't know they were on a cinematic titanic of sorts. I mean, what's he going to say, "I can't wait for people to see how terrible this is?"

They all knew it was going to be bad. I mean, come on, how could they not. The 1st Nuclear Man subplot was wretched, they could see from the dialies how poorly this whole thing played.

Yup, I was 12 and it's a measure of how excruciatingly rotten every frame of this abomination is that I feel not a single pang of nostalgia. Seeing this movie was akin to attending a funeral.

It's the only movie in my collection I've resolved never to watch again, and I say this as someone who also owns Red Sonja. I can't even watch it for the commentary anymore.

Superman IV deserves to be burned and never spoken of again.

But then I say this as a staunch defender of Superman III, so clearly I have no moral or intellectual high ground to stand on.

I'll defend Supergirl as a flawed but interesting movie, with a great lead in Helen Slater. It's a lot of fun. Great score, too.

It goes without saying that the recent Supergirl television series with Melissa Benoist is much better, though (Slater had a role on that show).

Same, but 3 at least had the awesome Smallville scenes and Evil Superman. Those 2 aspects save part III.

...what's wrong with Red Sonja?

I'd recommend checking out this fanedit - Conan & Red Sonja.
