Slaughter is old hat. So I guess that's why nobody's ignoring the context of the killing that's going on to remind people online that they consider murder to be a bad thing.
Or because people typically take that stuff more seriously now because of what has come to light in the last twenty to thirty years, which can make them shortsighted. Doesn't help either that men can't even be left alone with children anymore. I've read stories like friends taking care of others' children and having the cops called on them by other parents, just because they didn't recognize them. Everyone is really suspicious these days. I'm trying not to get too political. But it doesn't have to be virtue signaling.

Slaughter in cinema is entertainment, so totally different. There are very few movies that use rape as entertainment. It doesn't serve most stories as well as a murder.

I don’t think that’s necessarily true for everyone who says that. Some people might be so stunned by the joke that they think it’s a mistake.

Take what seriously? Drunk teenagers who think they are funny/clever talking crap?

You realise that what you've said about "what's came to light" acknowledges more historical context to explain the attitudes that produce a stupid joke like that from Bob?

I personally don't believe that except that audiences attitudes weren't conditioned to completely ignore context, for solemnity's sake.

You're overthinking it. I thought of it more "solemnly," more defensively, because some old guy was talking crap about millennials again. I had to watch the scene one more time with a different mindset after your explanation before I remembered.

Why would you be stunned unless you were particularly sensitive to the idea being expressed with complete disregard of the context? But more importantly. Why would you go to the bother of being stunned on a public, online forum before taking 15 seconds to consider the context and use common sense, internally?

For the 45 anniversary release.

The same hand wringing is often observed in relation to Bill Paxton's immortal line in True Lies.

I think you’re trying to analyze this too deeply. Some people might be so taken aback by the joke that they ignore the context. Their initial reaction could be all they’re thinking about. Of course many people will use this as an excuse to virtue signal online but there has to be a number of people who legitimately think it might be a mistake. I don’t know why you think this is an impossibility. Not everyone who hears that line for the first time is going to then proceed to ask themselves a number of logical questions that will result in them understanding the context of the dumb joke made by the drunk teenager.

But plenty of them quickly proceed to wonder aloud (analyse, you might say) the suitability of the line on an online forum. That's a poor excuse.

Someone who declines to consider the context of the line on their own initiative, if the line sticks out to them, is clearly very stupid or has ulterior motives for hastily expressing their disapproval or disquiet in public. That's my whole point. Not really overthinking it is it? Not compared to all the theories and handwringing that's been expressed to try and understand why the line is there in the first place.

Besides, I don't see how it can be virtue signaling if you think it was a mistake. If it was a mistake, then it obviously wouldn't have been said in poor taste and there would be little to demonstrate your good character over. I still think it's a weird thing to say, but it hasn't bothered me in any of my three viewings.

That makes no sense. People are questioning the actor as if he could not have said such a thing in any context except in error. And ignoring the fact that he's an actor playing a character who is drunk and trying to be funny about the situation at hand of getting away with nookie while someone is babysitting in the same house.

Yeah but, excuse me for thinking solemnly about it for a moment. Isn't it stunning that the young Michael kills his naked sister at the beginning? What was that all about?! That's horrible. Do you think maybe the actor made an error and was supposed to bring her a glass of milk up from the kitchen instead of a knife to stab her with?

What I find strange about people who take issue with Bob’s line about Lindsey is that they don’t take issue with Lynda’s reply. She says “Totally!” She doesn’t say “Ew, that’s gross Bob!” How dare she brush off his gross joke like that!

Lynda understood the context and she wasn't trying to impress anyone on an internet forum.

I think we need to talk seriously about Dr. Loomis' mistreatment of someone who was seriously mentally ill.

There's a swathe of people out there who'd say otherwise from multiple generations and probably call you a wannabe murderer or some other derogatory ad-hominem over what you've just stated. This sort of content is always contextual why it's done and why someone would be "entertained" by it. Sometimes horrible things are entertaining because they're horrible, picking and choosing which is the right one is just silly. You're falling in that camp.
