This was a very early experiment. I suspect that in 1978 many 70mm venues still had unconverted Todd-AO sound systems, with full range reproduction of tracks 2 & 4 (the tracks carrying both the baby boom and the split-surround info above 450 Hz) on LC & RC speakers. Releasing type 42 prints was probably considered easier and more reliable for ensuring compatibility with those installations than requesting/requiring appropriate filtering for or turning off the LC & RC speakers. Also turning off LC & RC would have eliminated any baby-boom reproduction, and was probably considered a less desirable solution than using a type 42 print.
Good points, the actual cinema(s) would need to have the proper filtering in place.

The theatrical cut, however, should be watched with the theatrical audio. I’ll probably never watch the UHD with the Atmos track.
As sacrilicious as it is, I completely agree. My first real long term exposure to Supes 78 was the SE with the remixed audio so I've got a soft spot for it. Heck, when I first got a DVD of Supes with the OG 2.0 it sounded shockingly poor, and still does. Thankfully we've now got the 70mm audio to bridge the gap and I'd never watch the theatrical without it. But if they do ever release the SE with the alleged beautiful new transfer on UHD and Atmos audio then I'll be there on day 1 for that too.

I still can't believe they cut out the Gauntlet in the Theatrical because of one line Otis says. I would have edited the line and kept the gauntlet myself.

"You mean...this stuff here will kill him"

Exercising the "...fire and bullets won't hurt this guy"

Yeah I hope they do offer up a better version of Supes 1 in the future. It can definitely be remastered much better and the Special Edition can be included. It’s part of the reason I’m reluctant to buy the current kinda expensive set, even though I have the reissue UHD with just that 2.0 track.

I think there's a lot of room for the improvement, I thought the HDR grade was so bad that I watched it in SDR. I wasn't impressed by the colors either.

I've come around to it but there are some really odd grading choices as you say and new digital artefacts to go along with lots of old analogue ones. The reused Supes 78 footage in the intro to Superman II's 4K transfer may be a glimpse of what's to come.

DTS-HD MA is a lossless codec, once "unzipped" by the AVR or the BD Player it's just PCM uncompressed

The 70mm is DTS-HD MA 5.1

Just out of curiosity: for those who are emailing requesting replacement discs, how many emails did you send or how long did you wait before you finally got a response from Warner? I am about to send my third email tomorrow.

For some, they never received a response and just received the copies or saw a package coming to them from fed ex. So, if you also sent pics of your copy and mailing address, then I would check Fed Ex My Delivery to see if you have a package coming to you. It’s a free service from Fed Ex.

About 15 minutes.

Remember to be polite, thorough with your proof of purchase, and include your shipping address, clearly marked. Make it easy for them to do business with you.

Based on the way people express their opinions here, I wouldn't be surprised if such cantankerousness shows up in their emails to WB, too.

I wonder how long it’ll take before the fixed version goes into circulation? Or will that only be the boxed set? I want to get 1&II and the Donner Cut, that’s all I’m really interested in except for maybe SR.

Wow, that fast? I sent my first email over a week ago and still have not heard back. Looks like others here are waiting forever to hear back as well.

Talking about fast I just got my 4K replacement discs for Superman I & II, which I have the separate/regular UK releases of. So it's worth it reaching out. I'm located in the Netherlands.
