EDIT: Varèse has updated their lasting and clarified the specifications of the SACD. Bold formatting is mine although it may conform to the listing as well:

Quote:
The Complete Edition Matrix soundtrack comes on two Hybrid SA-CDs (Super Audio CDs). These Hybrid SA-CD’s contain a CD layer that can be played on any CD player, and a hi-resolution SA-CD layer that contains DSD audio in stereo and surround versions. The audio on the SA-CD layer has been upsampled from 48 thousand samples per second 24bit PCM audio to 2.8 million samples per second 1 bit DSD audio. When these disks are inserted into an SA-CD player or a Blu-Ray player that can play SA-CD’s, you will hear up-converted hi-resolution DSD audio in stereo or surround and realize the sonic enhancement that comes from the up-conversion.

Few blockbusters can claim to be as influential as The Matrix (1999), written and directed by the Wachowskis. From its super high-concept that has wormed its way into the public’s imagination (what if we’re all just living in a computer simulation?), to Keanu Reeves’ iconic hero Neo, to the brilliant, jaw-dropping and story-based visual effects, The Matrix delivered on all fronts. Its three films grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide, and a fourth is on the way.

The Matrix demanded a score that was as unique, sophisticated and imaginative as its concept and action—and got one from composer Don Davis. Davis, who scored the Wachowskis’ Bound (1996), reinvented the symphonic language of the action blockbuster by drawing on cutting-edge concert-hall minimalism and his own background as an avant-garde composer, while maintaining the energy, pace and density required of a studio action film.

From the clashing-brass “reflections,” to the racing strings, pounding percussion and flittering, repeating musical “cells,” the Matrix score fits hand-in-glove with the film’s concept of a computer-controlled reality—and offers a unique musical thumbprint that is recognizable sometimes only from a single note or chord. It is the rare commercial triumph that is also an artistic landmark.

The Matrix was released by Varèse Sarabande at the time of the film, and then in a Deluxe Edition that fit as much of the score as possible on one CD. By popular demand, this new 2-5.1 SA-CD set, (also available for Record Store Day as a 3LP set), presents the complete score. Liner notes feature a new interview with Don Davis conducted by Kaya Savas.

Limited to 1000 copies.

Very interesting. A standard redbook 2xCD edition is also available, for $15 less and limited to 2000 copies:

https://www.varesesarabande.com/prod...ete-score-2-cd

I don't own any edition of the score, so I went for the SACD, despite the lack of details and higher price.

I can’t play back SACD properly and it’s apparently near impossible to copy to a computer; if only it was Blu-ray audio or something, like the LotR complete recordings release.

Going with the standard CD like a pleb.

I thought the only reliable way to rip SACD was to use a PS3 with the right firmware or something.

As many threads that get bumped for things like “Has there been any word on this being released?”, “Is this movie worth a blind buy?” and “Is this still shipping with a slipcover?”, who gives a shit? Ordered the regular CD release since the $15 upcharge for SACD was too much for my blood.

There's a published list of players that can do it. It's not huge and some may be hard to find now (Oppo was on the list a lot), but it was more than just the PS3.

Not because of the SDR TV presentation or anything, because teal is teal. Unless UHD HDR WCG WTF makes teal look like gold, it's unlikely my opinion will change.
That sounds like the same transfer that was used for the original blu-ray release. It was bathed in teal across the board and look terrible.

Having watched the 4K I can assure you that it looks phenomenal. The greenish pallor is present as intended in the Matrix scenes but there are no color grading issues.

I have the same UHD player as you and had no sync issues with the Atmos track.

If you keep just the English audio tracks and subs, it is only 52.1 GB.

Dolby Atmos
Dolby Digital 5.1 theatrical mix
Four commentaries
English SDH

I'm shocked too, but I am not complaining at all. SACD was and is a solid format, DSD can sound incredible and is like listening to a perfectly clean LP every time if it is from a tape source.

48/24 is what was recorded digitally in that era and is still pretty much standard now, so they're giving us the score in the highest quality possible which is great. Should have a nice bump up over the CD fidelity wise too.

Is there any technical benefit in SACD over Blu-ray Audio? There are a few labels still doing regular SACD releases, so I get that targeting your intended demographic is part of the decision process here; but in terms of ease of playback/ripping, I'd probably have preferred a Blu-ray Audio disc? And they'd have been able to fit it all on one disc instead of two.

Still purchased though, lol.
