I picked this up too and it looks amazing. Absolutely amazing. I also owned the bluray and checked it out also.

And yes, the 4K discs are better, although the original blurays look amazing still.

If I am being 100% honest, I am not prepared to say it's a necessary upgrade.

However, make no mistake. I am damn glad I have it.

I did as well. I think it had a release date delivery too. Might inquire about this one.

Well, my pre order from Amazon hasn't shipped yet either and no indication of when I can expect it. Some benefit for being a Prime member. I thought the price was decent so I ordered from them. They're going to be my last choice to give my movie orders to from now on. Disappointed but it's not the end of the world...will watch The Incredibles from Best Buy today. That got delivered on release day.

Always wanted to upgrade first 3 seasons to Atmos. I will get this using Red sparrow 5$ GC, hopefully will have rest in 4K soon.

If your local BestBuy has a copy they dropped it to the same price as Amazon.

I have read a lot of articles about the shooting of the first season using the ARRI cameras. I know that they stuck with ARRIs (with tweaked color LUTs) for the rest of the series, but anyone know what resolution and production pipeline was used for each of the other seasons?

I would bet 2.8k Arri footage with 2k effects and a 2k finish.

Canceled my Amazon order and ordered from Walmart for pick up today. Sorry, Amazon, you had your chance to get my money. Will think twice before renewing Amazon Prime.

Since 16:9 is their distribution AR wouldn't it be more likely they were finishing in 1080 rather than 2K?
I know the first season was finished in 1080p (Arri cameras recorded to HDCAM SR while shooting, then they switched to Codex for subsequent seasons http://www.studiodaily.com/2012/03/g...-for-season-2/) so I suspect that would also be the case with subsequent seasons?

Is it true the first season was shot at 1080p resolution? I know it had a 2K finish, but wasn't completely sure if it was true that it was only shot at 1080p.

If that's the case, consider GOT's first season on UHD, as another example of why better chroma-subsampling, and precise resolution upscaling, as well as HDR, can make virtually anytyhing look outstanding in 4K, regardless of the resolution it was shot at.

Man, I thought Paramount killed it with the 4K release of 'Cloverfield'--but this work by Warner Bros is absolutely gorgeous.

They recorded to HDCAM SR, which (correct me if I'm wrong) is maxed out at 1080p. Are you 100% sure the first season was actually finished in 2K?

I don't know what it was finished at. I just know this shit looks amazing.

Warner Bros did God's work with this one.

Very much looking forward to getting this set. Haven't watched season 1 since its BD release so looking forward to revisit it in stunning HDR.

I have to refrain from watching too much so I can watch it with my girl later tonight.

But dude, from what I did demo, it makes it really hard to believe it was shot in 1080p. If that is indeed the case, shit like 'real-or-fake 4k' needs to be tossed directly out of a window.

This is all about the care and love that a studio puts into a release. Again, if this is indeed derived from a 1080 source, you're still seeing more fine detail, more depth, and better foreground/background separation on these discs--compared to say, 'Grease' or 'T2', which were DNRd to hell and back, yet still came from a 4K source.

The blu-rays for this series were already ridiculously strong, amongst the best in my collection so i'm not expecting to be blown away by this first season detail-wise based on the tech specs. I'll honestly even be happy with a nice HDR makeover Won't be checking these out until the inevitable box set though!

That's correct. HDCAM SR is maxed out at 1920x1080. So it was likely finished this way. Wouldn't really make sense to upscale this to 2k.

On later seasons they ditched the tapes. They also used Arri Alexa XTs, theoretically capable of 3.4k.

I once read they recorded at 2.8k with 16:9 AR (2880x1620) and a 2k finish. Buit I can't find it anymore and of course I don't if it's true.

Man.

That is insane if it was finished at 1080, but looks this damn good!

Take a bow, Warner Bros!

Warner helped with Westworld but didn't HBO do this one on their own?

If it was Warner it would've been three BD-66's...
