I’ll definitely give Shane that one. He pretty much summarized the whole experience.

I would disagree with his notion that the DNR shots look smudgy. If anything, in some of the DNR shots, it looks like specialty textures have attempted to be overshaprened. Meaning, some edge enhancement was probably involved, too.

However, considering how many people were acting like the sky was falling based on early reviews, this actually didn’t turn out that bad.

This does, at the very least, look a lot better than other DNR applied films on this format.

So I guess the general consensus so far is that it's not as terrible as blu-ray.com review make it out to be, and that though DNR has been applied, it's not as bad as Grease 4K and no way close to being as bad as T2 4K. And that though it's not like Saving Private Ryan 4K, it's still an upgrade over the previous BD.

And only a bias over being disappointed would make a user on here spout nonsense like this is no upgrade over the blu-ray. Dunno about anyone else but I grow tired of the hyperbole around some of these!

Similar with Braveheart. Because it didn't match The Patriot in quality, some people inferred it wasn't worth upgrading lol

The old scan is technically dated but certainly not from a 3rd or 4th generation source!

I've just chided someone for judging a film by its caps in another thread but holy balls, every single one of those capsaholic images for Gump looks very smudgy to my eyes. I think their usual terrible SDR conversion is smooshing the colours together in certain parts of the image so it's hard to judge how certain textures and larger areas of colour are being affected by the underlying tinkering, but the watercolour-filter-esque processing is definitely there.

The issue here isn't that more modern stocks are finer-grained, especially in well-exposed daylight exteriors, it's that there appears to be this pall of over-processed smudgyness to textures that pervades the entire movie. Some will watch it and see absolutely nothing wrong, some will react with horror. I do of course want to see it for myself but this has 2 for £30 written all over it...

Ja, there's no way a major studio picture was transferred from anything less than an IP over the last few decades.

Even I will admit some shots do look good. But the bad shots are terrible, and until there is some kind of explanation about what is exactly going on with these releases I cannot just excuse this because 90s effects or whatever.

Some of the shots look too hideous to have anything to do with effects, and this release can still suck my balls. More like two for 20 deal here. I just want the slipcover if I ever do buy it.

But doesn't everyone think this has some kind of anniversary release written all over it? The only idea I have is they don't give a **** to redo anything.

Still they certainly kept ****ing with Terminator 2 across Bluray, so there is some hope.

All I ask is that reviewers don't get the nostalgia goggles on. It boggles my mind when people want to award this transfer 4 stars. That is the exact crap that should not be happening, and in that regard I am relieved people are calling it out, especially Liebman here because he had some problems at the start of the bluray decade.

Yep. I can't believe people are actually going out and buying this after everything that has been reported.

I'm gonna pick this Release up since I don't already have it on Blu-ray. I was gonna pick up yesterday at Best Buy but The SlipCovers were in Very Unacceptable Condition to me so I passed I'll get it when I find one with A Slip in Good Condition.

I'm curious to see this in person, but I can't justify the double dip at $25. Even if it is one of my favorite films. I already got burned on Goodfellas.

Yeah, pretty much, apart from the Nolans but he's the reason why they look like that.
