There was no chance that a "no-name" actress would have been in this movie, because in few of their interviews, Emily Blunt stated that they had a known actress that they had intended to play the wife. However, after Emily read the script, she said that she was definitely going to take the role instead. Few of the interviewers had asked who they initially had in mind, but Emily said that she would never tell other than that it was a close associate. Many speculate that it might have been Anne Hathaway, which I'm sure she would have been an excellent casting choice as well.

Regardless of actress credibility, I think this movie's premise alone would have spread the same buzz. The trailers alone definitely garnered my interest and definitely wanted to see it, it's just that the film also happened to star Emily Blunt and John Krasinki, which was a bonus.

That story always made her seem arrogant. You just don’t go around and say you want a part at the expense of another actress, regardless if you’re related to the filmmaker. It’s hard for a woman to get roles. I mean, for example, last week, I went to get some coffee ice cream and found out the person next to me already got the last scoop. I didn’t take his cone away because I’m a sensible adult and decided it wasn’t worth the trouble.

BTW, I think it’s Anna Kendrick. Krasinski’s worked with her before.

Not that I know much about Hollywood, but I would assume it's not just about talent. It's also about the right time and opportunity. It's also competitive as hell.

Emily Blunt strikes me as an intelligent woman who saw a good script and ran with it. Any other actor in her position probably would do the same thing.

It's not like she pushed another down the stairs in order to steal a role.

Besides, there are other ice cream shops.

I wouldn't say arrogant. It was a way of sharing her story of how she fell in love with the script to the point that she felt that she had to take part in it, rather than let it slip for someone else. Her husband wrote it and was going to direct it, so obviously she had an advantage when it came to casting.

Anna Kendrick would have been great as well, but not sure how close she is to Emily. Anne Hathaway seemed more plausible considering how close they are after working together in The Devil Wears Prada. Plus, John Krasinski is a big fan of Anne Hathaway too. It's an interesting thought but something we'll just never know.

I agree. Right opportunity and timing probably plays a huge factor. And yep, it's not like Emily destroyed another actress' career by taking the role.

Then there's also the consideration that a "Due date" is just a guesstimate. They couldn't know for sure when she was going to go into labor and if she did go into labor, she would not be in any condition to walk that long distance.

The resource they had, they utilized, which was the fireworks they rigged to draw the monsters away.
I guess so. It is a shame the human gestation period is only three weeks. If it was longer, say 9 months, that would give you more time to plan for it, and be prepared when it arrived? I guess if they had more time, like months, they'd either have setup a hut at the waterfall, or dug a nice soundproof cave that didn't have pipes in it. It is just a shame pregnancy only lasts 3 weeks...

I'll just shut up about it though. It was good, but as is often the case when a movie is constantly hyped, I'm let down.

Looking at the extenuating horrific conditions they were living in, you do what you have to do to survive. When it comes to the baby you're carrying you are going to walk, run or whatever you have to do. The instinct to survive and protect your baby can be powerful.
No, I don't personally know any women in the military (Thank you for your service, by the way!). I'd venture to say that women in the military are not your run-of-the-mill, average woman, though; you're additionally unique in your capabilities. I'm going to guess your discomfort and pain threshold is higher than most women, as well. Emily's character was portrayed as someone who didn't seem like she was capable of doing jumping jacks in her 9th month. She was waddling pretty slowly as she was doing the "chores" around their home.

Sure given strenuous circumstances, I am sure the average woman likely could make themselves to do a lot more. I just think they would try to utilize the capabilities they had within the comforts of their own home to keep Emily's character there. They had everything already -- shelter, food, crops, food storage, tools, electricity, underground bunker, make-shift security system, silent baby alert system (the rows and rows of red lights), etc. They were trying to lead a "normal" life given those circumstances.

Again as I was outlining up above, they had everything established, they had the amenities they needs there already and the capability to prepare for 9 months to have their child there in a soundproof shelter. From the way they portrayed it, it looked like Emily's character went into labor earlier than her due date. There's no accounting for that. Could they have had her stay at the waterfall for the last month of her pregnancy? Sure, but again, when they had ALL of the resources, why would they? And what about after the baby is born? They had to think of a way to live for an extend period of time after the delivery. The baby had the best chance of survival right there at their home and I don't think they wanted to put the baby in a higher risk situation, especially given they already lost a child.

Anyway, this is just me trying to justify that the movie just worked, as I am sure your point of view is the reason why it didn't quite work for you.

As a huge fan of The Office, it's still weird seeing sarcastic, prankster Jim playing serious roles. Guys a really good actor though.

I look at it like this. For thousands of years women have given birth in less than ideal circumstances and I doubt we could imagine all of the scenarios. I read some years ago that Native American women would pinch the noses of their newborns to stop them from crying. In the military we were conditioned and in better shape, but as I said when it comes to survival and protecting the baby you're carrying, there is no such thing as too extreme.

About going to the waterfall, I don't think it would've been ideal either. The impression I got from the movie is that it's quite a trek from where they're living. Plus, where do you go to get the supplies and would you risk the sounds that could be made in getting them to the waterfall?

Last night when I was thinking about the movie, it occurred to me how much noise we actually make in our daily lives. Getting a glass of water from the sink would make noise. Even though it was joked about above, farting, snoring and other noises that our bodies naturally make could be a risk, too. The discipline it takes not just for one's self but also for children is an enormous task. How to express yourself has taken on a whole new meaning. Even on my best days I can be as clumsy as hell or will express myself by setting something down a little harder than I normally would. That urge has to be suppressed and emotional outbursts have to redefined.

Hats off to the filmmakers and cast for doing such a great job.

I love the office too. It’s one of the few comedies that’s still hilarious after repeat viewings. He’s a very good actor. Not too many actors can do comedy and drama.

Not only that, but how about a deaf child? They don't know how loud they are being when they are doing something.

I agree, for many, many years women have given birth in conditions that we can't imagine. We, nowadays, have a hard time giving up the conveniences that we have. I'd guess given tough circumstances, we would cling (maybe even irrationally so) to ANY of the conveniences we still had. I guess that's another reason why I didn't even question why they would stay there.

The husband has had the bad misfortune of having several nasal surgeries to fix his chronic condition. Despite the urge, he knows how to stop a sneeze before it happens.

I can see changing your diet in order to pass gas as little as possible. Wearing O2 at night to avoid snoring.

But the one thing I'm not sure is that controllable are the hiccups. Seeing that would've been both scary and hilarious at the same time.

They could make a great parody movie off this haha. Imagine the possibilities (farting, hiccuping, burping, silent fight like in The Other Guys, funny sex scene, etc.)!
