What about the Matrix LaserDisc, no big ballers here with that in their collection? Better than the DVD? Where's Mij when you need him

I watched this a few weeks ago at Red Rocks in Colorado for the 25th anniversary and it was awesome. They set up a huge screen and there was like 10,000 people there. It was sooooooo cool. I love this friggin movie,

Here is a fresh HDR/SDR comparison that I've come across. Watch in HDR on your HDR screen (in the description, there is also a link to a file for better quality).
Share your experience on your rig and your thoughts.

Although there was no cat scene that I mentioned before (the frames were picked randomly by a script), there are still many cases where I notice a dimly-lit scene graded noticeably lower in HDR than in SDR.
Here are a bunch of examples from the video that I've noticed on my C3:

most Nebuchanezzar shots are dimmer in HDR than in SDR - they are graded lower, with everything getting less illumination and shadows often smothering details

1:22 - Neo's outline is easier to see in SDR (albeit a bit noisier), while his right hand is almost entirely consumed by the shadow in HDR
1:55 Morpheus in the elevator gets much more illumination in SDR than HDR
2:15 old sewers - the scene looks less detailed in HDR
3:52 the rooftop chase is easier to see in SDR

The main thing I remember about the initial film's release 25 years ago, is there was so much green in it. I later learned that was intentional, to contrast events inside the Matrix from those in the real world (which were mostly tinted blue).

I bought the original trilogy in 4K a few days ago off Amazon, and its supposed to arrive on the 7th. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how it looks and sounds, compared to previous home video versions. I know I had the DVD collection around the mid-2000's or so, but I don't recall ever buying them on Blu-Ray.

Funny thing, my memory of it was that it was very blue.

Weirdly, the print I saw was a lot more yellowish green than any of the greens I've seen from pics of the home video releases. Not really any teal apart from sets / costumes.

Does anyone know how remixed the audio on the 4K is? I don't really remember the gunshots sounding like it did on the print but maybe I'm just misremembering. Will pop it in again eventually

All I know is that I saw this three times in 1999 and the one part I distinctly remember it being almost blue was the lobby shootout sequence and subsequent rooftop scene. I always thought the original DVD was pretty close at least for those bits.

Could be film aging? I've seen a film several months ago from 35mm that wasn't too old (2007), and it was rather yellow. Even the Asterix and Obelix trailer that was somehow still on the reel had the same yellow cast. That copy wasn't properly stored, I guess - I've seen much older films with better colours at the same place.

I thought that too, but everything else didn't look faded. The skintones were natural in the scenes that are teal on the disc - so the interior of the ship, the outside of the matrix. The opening WB logo was properly green like on the disc.

A reddit thread again brought up the really bright HDR and more importantly the weird choice to go on a BD100 when they don't even use the disc space. They literally just go a few GBs over and the film doesn't even hit 50Mbps average. Really strange choice.

Compression seems decent on the disc at least, but you gotta wonder what the hell they were thinking lol. Somebody didn't want to go back and give this one a better encode, but they must have had to squash more audio tracks on or something.

That's exactly it. The main video encode could fit onto a UHD66 without difficulty, but Warners love to bolt on a gajillion audio tracks. IIRC one of the sequels is actually on a 66 on the US edition but is a 100 elsewhere because of the extra audio.

That said, I don't think the compression is bad on any of them as you say. (Warners' encoding is rarely bad but it's not amazing either.) And more or less bits either way would do nothing to alleviate the issues that some folks have with these, namely the inconsistent colour grading. I don't mind it at all, but some regard it as a crime against cinema.

The Matrix looks mostly fine, but if you look at the bitrate then Jesus, it can drop to some ridiculous lows!
