What I really want to know is if they actually kept the script intact for all the scenes about periods, or if they figured out a way to somehow bypass the topic altogether and instead came up with some other lame dialog "fit" for American audiences... If it was Disney, I'm sure they'd think of something to ruin it. Hopefully not since its GKids instead... If they were to modify the script like that, I would totally boycott the release...

Have they specified the theaters yet where it will be shown when it goes wide release in February? Right now it's only in NYC at one theater on January 1...

It's only playing in NYC for a week and then it goes nationwide February 26th so you'll get to see it!

It's probably going to be similar to When Marnie was There since GKIDS is the distributor again.

Edit: I'll let you know if I catch anything different in the dialog.

Hmm, well then I'll have to drive 75 minutes away to go see it, if it plays at the same theater - but that's easily doable. I know neither of my daughters nor my mother will want to go along with me, though, as none of them cared for it much - too long and boring for them...

I can understand their viewpoint. I think the ability for the movie to connect with everyone is what makes it great though.

My state is not on the list yet. I would have to go all the way to Atlanta to see it.

Bah, I'm not driving 2+ hours to Center-City Philly during Rush Hour to go see it... guess I'll just watch my JP release in my home projection theater that Tuesday evening, and call it a success! At least I can haz alcoholic beverages with my theater popcorn in my own theater...

I have faith in GKids. They have treated their Ghibli releases with respect so far and included the breast feeding scene in Kaguya. I'm actually relieved when GKids get's dibs on a Ghibli release and hopefully there may even be some included art pamphlet like in Poppy Hill.

I want to know if they are going to use the English or the Japanese version of the Rose.

Actually, Studio Ghibli, not GKids, produces the English dub (its International Distribution chief Geoffrey Wexler serves as producer; Wexler also produced the dubs to Poppy Hill, The Wind Rises, Kaguya, and Marnie). So I wouldn't worry about the content being charged.

https://jp.linkedin.com/in/geoffreywexler

It's likely Ghibli has much input over the North America home video releases (even the one handled by Disney, which almost all still have disc art), and Ghibli contractually has a "no cuts" clause in terms of distribution.

Wish I could watch it in theaters, but unfortunately that would mean I would have to drive 8 hours to Minneapolis in March :-/ Even though I have the Taiwan BD, I'll probably get the NA BD release when it comes out for the English dub.

Has anyone used the Disney Movie Nex Club codes? Does this version of the movie club give awards?

I found then somewhere an online version probably coming from a dvdrip, and it was the same!
I think i watched the storyboard version too in the Bluray extras and it was again the same.
Really weird!!
Just received my TW copy of Ocean Waves and part of me wants to believe the team was being experimental with scene transitioning but it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to do it there since it's not a flashback. My guess is it's an old editing mistake (possibly dating back to when it originally aired on TV?) Odd either way.

Yeah it could well be, and Ghibli are the type of studio that would keep it in if it was an old broadcasting error as well!

Saw Only Yesterday yesterday (no pun intended). There was no cutting of scenes. The voice acting was excellent as usual.

Aoi Teshima (who sings the theme songs to Tales from Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill) has a English cover to The Rose on one of her albums.
