There was only ever commentary on 7/8 episodes of season one. This release hasn’t added any more, unfortunately.

"Not always 100% accurate" is a VAST understatement mate, the way that the capsaholic caps are compressing the colour is a bit of a joke.

Oh wow this looks great! Only two episodes in but it's considerably nicer than the stream with fantastic shadow detail and natural HDR. Watching in daylight so I can't speak to black levels but there's no crush/banding. Eager to finish this season and eager to have the rest on UHD!

Update as I just made it halfway through the season. Overall it's very natural, plenty of dark scenes get dark yet never lose detail, and every once in a while there's an amazing golden sunlight where HDR and WCG really shine. Scenes in the north are drained of color, naturally, while Kings Landing is warm and welcoming; the stained glass in the throne room also vibrant and lovely. Aside from the occasional wonky background replacement VFX shot with dim highlights, color and HDR are perfect.

The resolution isn't bad; sharper than some 2K upscales from Warner Bros. and very clean with no visible sharpening halos. Sound is fantastic as well. Very happy with it!

If it isnt, why would you wait?

Unless you mean to buy them as a set.

Apparently the Blu-rays are already fantastic; I'm just watching these after having only seen the digital streaming versions which are not very good. If you have the Blu-rays I'm not sure how much of an upgrade these are but they're definitely an upgrade to me.

Im on a similar boat. Only started watching the show last summer, and its only been hboGO.

Banding and crushing were ever present tho the picture was more than decent....but they were there.

I didn't notice and banding or crush on these UHD discs. Exceptionally clean!

It's definitely an upgrade over the bluray just not substantially so. Personally, this is one of my favourite shows of all time so I absolutely don't mind the purchase, even after having purchased all 7 seasons on bluray already (and season 1-4 steelbooks for dolby atmos).

I would say, if you're a big fan or don't own the blurays already, it's definitely worth the purchase. Otherwise, you may want to wait for an inevitable complete series boxset, although, I imagine that is at least 2+ years away.

I think I'm going to finish off with standard Blu-ray through the rest of GoT, and then I'll wait patiently for some Black Friday or other deal for the inevitable complete 4K set in the future. It might take 5 years to get that deal, but have it I will.

As it is anyway, it seems like the 4K video here is not as stellar an upgrade as one would have hoped from perhaps the most influential television series of its generation (if not a few generations at that). HBO has every reason to ensure the highest quality transfer on a release like this. Maybe this is the best they can do...Maybe. I doubt it. But maybe.

In the meantime I'll stick with my "George Bush on a pike" Season 1 Blu-ray set.

The show was shot in 1080p. The upgrade is probably as much as was possible given that limitation

Hopefully the final season will actually get a true 4k finish but this is as good as Season One could have looked

Also can back up this dude’s post.

I watched that same exact scene last night, and it looked nothing like that screenshot:

Indeed, but lost detail would not happen stripping HDR.

I watched all seasons so far on Blu-Ray (with Atmos) and I think the encoding was severely bit starved, with a lot of compression artifacts. If somebody points them out you cannot unsee them.

Hopefully the ~4K version is much better in that regard.

There's a difference between "stripping" HDR and actually converting it to SDR with as few issues as possible, and whatever method Mr Caps is doing is absolutely destroying the chroma detail in several of his caps, those Fury Road ones are a joke (as proved by whitestang in the MMFR thread). Seems like the higher the brightness/range of the source then the more Caps' conversion is just nuking the chroma (quelle surprise, HDR strikes again).

How are we two years (going into three) into UHD Blu-ray releases and the staff here still don't have their equipment sorted for this?

Well, given that sorting out UHD caps - or at least ones that are truly representative of what these discs actually look like in HDR - is an almighty crapshoot and will remain so for as long as we're looking at them on SDR displays then I'm not sure it's worth their effort.
