Hey guys, I seem to remember a thread that I thought was on this forum which compared the audio and video bit rates for each North American and Japanese Miyazaki Blu-ray release, essentially showing which Japanese releases were superior and which NA release were just as good.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks so much.

A little out of date, but I still find it useful:

Same. Just waiting on DHL to delivery today. We finally caught up with our, semi-annual complete Ghibli catalog Blu-ray viewing; this will be the last one we watch before we pack up the Blu-ray player. The movers will be here next week. :-)

Okay, here's mine! It didn't come in a polybag, surprisingly, and I don't have anything similar to fit it in (it's about as wide as the original Nausicaa release), so I just carefully cut a slit in the plastic, remove the booklet, and slipped it in under the plastic. The silhouette series continues!

Also, a nice unexpected surprise: an ad for Mary and the Witch's Flower inside. Sort of feels like Ghibli saying to Yonebayashi and Nishimura "go forth, my children, and make your mark on the world."

And one more little thing I'd like to share. You guys know me and how I attach meaning to these things :-)

Human beings are always looking for parallels and hidden meanings in things that are probably meaningless, but nevertheless bring us comfort. Today's example, and one that makes me feel that tiny bit more at peace about leaving New York: the Japanese Studio Ghibli Blu-ray of Hayao Miyazaki's "Porco Rosso" (The Red Pig) was released, and arrived to me, two weeks after we moved to NYC. The Japanese Studio Ghibli Blu-ray of Michael Dudok de Wit's "La Tortue Rouge" (The Red Turtle) was released, and arrived to me, two weeks before we leave and head back to California. We weren't originally supposed to leave New York until June 15th when our lease is supposed to be up, but now we're leaving April 1st. Maybe it was meant to be.

Could one of you check the extras and let me know if they include subtitles.

Is the Takahata interview subbed?

Also, if the short films aren't subtitled, are they without dialogue in the same way as the movie?

Interviews and Making of has only Japanese subtitles for foreign language (de Wit speaking French and Dutch - this is subtitled to Japanese, Takahata's speaking Japanese and his speach is not subtitled at all).

Shorts are not subtitled, they're all voiceless just as the "Turtle".

No English subtitles at all. And just to note that Japanese edition has different Making of and interviews, not the same as on French edition.

I've also had this issue in the past on the spines of some manga that are of an orange/yellow color... So I'm guessing it is an issue with the ink or whatever is used for the coloring, coupled with the color itself.

Anybody else having this issue? Kinda a bummer considering how expensive these things are....
Sorry for responding to this older post, but it's relevant. I can't snap a picture right now because it's "undergoing treatment" as I call it, but I bought a used copy of Only Yesterday when I was in Japan that was terribly faded (except I didn't realize it until I unwrapped it). Probably why it was discounted. It's basically yellow on the spine instead of orange, and the front is peachy instead of orange except for two squares where the price tags were. I've basically blacked out all the yellow areas and am trying to get it somewhat uniform.

Thanks for the response. Too bad about the Takahata interview.

I guess this means I might want this edition in the future though because of the short films.

Other than the first one, they're all *very* good. But yes, I'm disappointed as well that the documentaries are not subtitled other than in Japanese. I'm not sure why I expected otherwise when I put them on.

Just FYI, the color is supposed to be closer to peach, not orange. Depending on the amount of peach color on your copy, it might be better to just leave it alone. Either way, show us some pictures if you're able to restore it to a uniform color.

Heh, the words I used don't do it justice, I suppose. It was in bad shape, but I was a poor ALT who wanted it less than 5000¥.

I found a pic in my files, you can see the damage I'm talking about. I think they left it in a shop window for a while. It was marked down to 3500¥ if I remember right.

Ah-- yes. The color under where the stickers were i definitely closer to what it's supposed to look like. Most of us here would probably tell you to just sell it and use the funds to get a new copy -- might only cost you about 2000 yen or so, maybe 2500 after eBay fees if that's how you decided to sell it.

In the meantime, you have a gorgeous Blu-ray of one of the best animated films of all time... at least the movie plays :-)

I've always wondered why it seems that only in Japan do DVD and BD covers fade so badly. If I had a nickel for each time I saw a badly-faded item on Yahoo JP Auctions, I would be able to afford a lot more anime, that's for sure!

Yeah, that's the important part! We'll see how the experiment goes with fading it out. The sun where I live in the US isn't nearly as strong as the apartment I had in Japan, so it will take a while, but I have a Spider-man air freshener hanging in my car that has turned into Spider-Gwen.

I'm not stereotyping when I say the sun is really stronger over there. My apartment windows faced sunrise, so I had to use a sleeping mask and black out curtains in order not to be awake at five in the morning every day. At least my laundry dried very quickly. Apartments are priced and sold based on the direction they face, and it's likely people hock their stuff when the sun fades it out and ruins it.

Default Horus US Blu-ray

So guys, anyone got a NA Blu-ray of Horus Prince of the Sun released on March 28? Can anyone compare its video quality with Japanese standalone release and the one from Takahata's Blu-ray box? Any difference whatsoever? BDInfo would be useful. The main question is what video is used by Discotek on this release.
Previously with The Castle of Cagliostro they simply used video encode from recent Japanese Blu-ray (it's preserved intact and this is just great).

Can you please post a BDInfo report of NA edition? And maybe some screenshots for comparison.
