Yeah, Cliff mentioned a date when they would begin pressing the discs and that's basically when the special features would be finalized. I can't remember if that was Aug 6th or not.

You're right, he said around August 6th.

It sounds to me like they attempted to recreate the stinger for the 5.1 mix, but the re-recording sounds way off from the original.

I'm not saying otherwise. I'm the biggest stickler for original audio there is; that's partly why I never bothered with the original 4K release of Halloween. But most folks, including me, have neither the knowhow or motivation to rip an audio or video file off the net and sync it up in some Frankensteined fashion. I'd rather just keep pressure on the studio/distributor to get it right the first time.

I'm pretty sure the 25th anniversary DVD had the original mono. It may have been encoded as 2.0, but it was there.

there is the 5.1 and a 2.0 'dolby surround' which sounds just like a downmix of the 5.1, most obvious in the inside car kill where the exterior crickets are audible inside the car .. it sounds weird because you hear the crickets inside but then they go quiet just before the first stinger plays when you see Michael Myers in the back seat, so they are used as a cue that something is about to happen

it's not like that on the commentary track.. crickets are completely silent on that whole view inside the car before you see Myers move. it's much more interesting sound design like that in my opinion .. when the camera is outside the window you hear the crickets, when you're inside you don't hear them so it's good use of point of view

so it seems the 20th anniversary edition had the original mono as a separate track but not the 25th unfortunately (at least the u.k one that I have), just the commentary track has it

it should be quite straightforward to verify the Shout release anyway just with that one scene, no crickets audible in the car should mean it's the original mono

EDIT my 2007 Canadian starz/anchor bay blu ray does have the original mono track without in-car audible crickets (just checked against reality to verify.. yes when I open my window I hear night crickets, when I close it I don't really hear them anymore)

The Inside Story was an A&E documentary. AMC's documentary on Halloween was part of their 'AMC Backstory' series.

That may be it; I think the US 25th Anniv. DVD had the mono.

The telltale moment for me is the loud thunderclap during the exchange...

"You mean you really never want him to get out."
"No..." BANNNGG!!!! "Never, never."

...which isn't there in the original mono.

Yes by chance it was that exact moment that made me realize the blu ray had the original mono, so yes a very good reference point

Weird they added all that extra thunder since the more muted sound is creepier, also it's weird that they can add all that extra stuff and you (meaning me) only notice after others point it out, even though I've been very into this film since at least the early 90's. Finding out about audio changes to movies I love has been a constant source of surprise lately

Another thing, which I did know already.. a little bit of noise is just fine, and so refreshing to hear ! The original mono had some noise, great They really need to dial this audio tinkering back in the future since it's no different than having too much DNR applied to the image. That noise is just as important as texture or grain, and they really should stop removing all of it.. goes back a little to what steele breeze mentioned before about timbre, remove all the noise and you also lose some tonal elements.. that along with the remixed level changes, alters the effect considerably. Time to revisit a lot of these soundtracks from that point of view I think .. stop removing all the noise and then adding shit because you now think it's too quiet

Anyway enough blabbering. Yes slip cases ...

I'm guessing it's because Halloween II's thread became a Halloween 6 Cut Comparison thread and Halloween 5's thread became a Halloween II TV vs Theatrical cut comparison.

ESC Editions & Distribution from France took to their Instagram today, that they will be releasing Halloween 40th Anniversary Edition on September 22nd with a NEW 4K MASTER!
Unfortunately nothing is said about the audio, I was wondering if their release might feature Dolby Atmos?

Does anybody have further info?
I mean we all know, that Shout Factory will also release a new transfer this October.

The edition can be pre ordered here: https://www.esc-distribution.com/hor...een&results=13

Ouch, now buyers have to wonder which remaster will be better.

Shout better not mess up the disc.

Since it look like it's licenced from Lionsgate it could be the 2013 remaster and not the 2021 remaster. But it is nice to see a good slipcase this time.

Then it’s not a “nouveau 4K master,” is it.

Original mono is what’s important re: audio options. The artwork is of course 1,000,000x better than SF’s.

Is there a screenshot comparison between the 2013 remaster and the latest 4K?

Didn't notice that, but this thread was also locked briefly in these past 24 hours. Something must be going on in the Halloween threads.

Really it should have been one thread from the start.

People have basically been treating this thread as a dumping ground for every thought they’ve had about any of the stupid sequels to this movie, so yeah, what’s the difference.

I wonder how long it’ll be before we learn more details about the French UHD.

I've been preaching this for weeks. Between the same exact information being posted across multiple threads, to the discussions inevitably wandering to other films in the series, it just makes sense. We should settle this the old democratic way and hold a vote.

I'm honestly like 50/50 on it. On one hand, it would be nice to just come to one thread to talk about these movies in general. But on the other, it would be a giant pain in the ass. If I wanna talk about H4 but everyone else is talking about HII, then I'm screwed. And it's gonna be doubly pain in the ass to have to scroll back through countless pages to find anything I'm potentially looking for.

I guess I'm more 60/40 in favor of keeping them separate. (But I won't be mad if they are merged)

Anyway, the new 4K scans for Indiana Jones were nice. Raiders and Last Crusade looked good. Temple of Doom looked mind blowingly outstanding in a lot of scenes. I hope these new Halloween scans look as good as ToD.
