This might be the only instance I wait on buying a single release to wait for a box set. Considering there's only 6 episodes left in the series, I'll wait for the whole set release in 4k, assuming we get one (still waiting for that 24 complete blu ray set). Now I'm praying for a breaking bad release in 4k. That's sony, so hot damn, it would be gorgeous.

Really was hoping for a box set containing all eight seasons hand-in-hand with the finale of Season Eight. I wonder if the 4k/HDR versions will be available to HBO subscribers as they are now, online or app, and if 1080p digital owners will be upgraded for free?

It is going to take a LONG time to regrade all 8 seasons in hdr. It is not a quick process. A 2-3 hour movie usually takes 1-3 weeks to grade in hdr depending on how many days/hours you work on it. So do the math and figure out how long an entire season will take. The times that by 8. Also keep in mind those people have other projects and jobs going on.

With a photochemical finish it's easier, if it's a new scan you'll have to start from scratch, the grade should be relatively simple in order to be faithful (so even if you didn't have to, starting over might be feasible), and there's rarely a definite reference for how the film should look in the digital realm that you need to conform 100% to. Plus if you're paying for a new scan it's more likely you'll want the grade done properly as well. I believe this simplicity and freedom has the potential to yield better results. With existing DIs it's largely the opposite. Modern grades can be incredibly complex and detailed with hundreds upon hundreds of masks, keys, tracks and very often there's a lot of look stuff like vignetting and degraining and regraining and sharpening involved. So the question then becomes are you going to spend the time and money to re-do all that stuff from the raw files, or just try to re-tool the existing grading project for HDR, maybe try to extend the highlights a bit here and there like some SDR->HDR TV mode and then call it a day? Plus even if you wanted to redo it, you have it right there on black and white how it "should" look, so I can imagine that might also be a limiting factor. |

The Atmos re-mixes are a given. They also started adding Atmos on the regular sets outside of the steel book editions. Too bad they can't dig into the archives again and try a do-over on the first two seasons' Atmos tracks. They couldn't find the separate elements because of poor archiving and the mixers couldn't make very good Atmos tracks for those seasons because of that.

Now this is amazing news. Hopefully we get the whole series in 4k, I would replace my all my blus in a heartbeat. I've already seen the first season 3 times but it would be worth another watch in 4k.
