I'm satisfied with 3D for the Hobbits, but I need that 4K for LOTR ,though my dream release is Extended with Theatrical in 4K, I'm not going to buy them separately.

They pulled the double dip on both DVD and Blu-ray. Lets see if they do the same with UHD.

I'd be perfectly fine with leaving out the Blu-rays and making this an entire UHD set like what was done with the Jurassic Park collection.

The 6.1 mixes are already beasts, I'd be OK with just getting those again.

I wonder if the films themselves will be altered in any way. Probably not, but they've talked about possibly doing that for many years now.

Need more deets! Theatrical and extended editions? Just one or the other? Will it include Blu-ray copies and all existing bonus material? NEW bonus material? (My #1 desire with this). 6-film collection? Two 3-film collections?

Also... you guys need to stop hating on the Hobbit movies. They’re not bad at all, especially if you view them with the right mindset and really understand what Jackson and Co. were going for with them (as well as the behind the scenes hell they were going through).

The extras for the TC and EC are probably the best most extensive bonus material for any movies I have ever seen.

Lord of the Rings
Movies - 10/10
Picture - 10/10
Sound -10/10
Extras - 10/10

That's what I'm kind of expecting - strangely I've never bought the theatrical editions, only the extended as they just seem more satisfying/closer to the books. I mean, Saruman's dramatic death was cut out of the original!

Still, can never figure why they can't use seamless branching to keep everybody happy. If we get the Star Wars OT in 2020 also, that will be a breakout year for UHD.

Either codec that's used on the 4K, it will sound good. Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a DTS:X or a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Without the audio specification listed on the back cover and on the disc, the listener wouldn't know if they were listening to DTS:X or Dolby Atmos.

I hope this release ditches the dark green tint they put on Fellowship.

I prefer the snappier pacing the theatrical edition these days (even though cutting Saruman's exit was an unfortunate omission), but I'm sure to get both if they do get sold separately. And I expect both versions will be available in 4K just like they were on Blu-Ray and DVD.

true, but how many people actually have 6.1 systems ?

It will be interesting how this trilogy as well as the Star Wars movies which all were mixed and released on bluray in 6.1 if the mono back surround channel aren't stereo-ized.

Dang, and I only ever watched my Blu-rays once, with headphones last year, before I got my first speakers.
