People talking about "cancel culture" because they are frustrated every time a conversation is not going all their way is getting out of control. It's "cancel culture" culture gone mad.

It makes complete sense that someone would think Loomis’s reply sounds like he’s answering a question if they thought Laurie was asking a question because the way Donald Pleasence enunciates that line would sound perfectly natural in response to a question. Also, the words “As a matter of fact” are often said in reply to a question, probably way more than to a statement.

This is what happens in Rob Zombie’s Halloween.

Laurie: “Was that the boogeyman?”

Although in this case Loomis answers in a very strange way. “As a matter of fact, I do believe it was.” So it’s a matter of fact that he believes Michael was the boogeyman but it’s not a matter of fact that he actually was?

That is my opinion as well, but she omits/swallows an "it" so it should be
"Was [it] the boogeyman?" IMHO.
Play the clip at 0.25 speed, listen and watch her mouth movement and her face expression, she utters a question from the look of it and not a direct statement.

But hey, everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

"As a matter of fact, it was" is a perfectly valid reply to either "It was the boogeyman" or "Was it the boogeyman?". It works either way. If she says it like a statement, he's confirming it. If she asks a question, he's answering it.
