It has a bit of an over processed look like Grease where the grain management is heavy-handed at times. It's again, not T2 wax dummy bad, but it could have been handled better (there are times when it's barely used and the 4k image really is excellent... if they had only dialed it back all the time). Scan-outs back to film for the CG composites have that smoothed over look from the early days of that technology and are easier to spot on the UHD disc. Outside shots fair better and I didn't notice any banding with the 12 bit Dolby Vision encode (I have a DV set). Sunsets and colorful scenes were quite lovely in the color rendition and saturation. HDR is subtle. It's the audio that's the real treat here. The Dolby Atmos remix has a lot more authority and punch than the previous, basically front-heavy 3.1 mix from the laserdisc, DVD, and prior Blu-ray. There's ample spot use of Atmos' immersive effect, especially in the Vietnam sequences (they roar to life with bullets, explosions, helicopters, and fighter jets all over the place) and whenever there's a storm (especially when Lt. Dan and Forrest get hit with a hurricane). Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 07-07-2018 at 09:44 PM. |

Picked this up for $17.76 and here are my thoughts. I really liked the transfer. To my eyes, this is nowhere near the disaster people were claiming it to be. While I do see how some scenes during the movie shift from razor sharp to slight softness, there is never a moment where it gets that bad. I think the transfer fairs far better for the most part and while I did spot an occasional hint of DNR (Gary Sinese first meeting Gump), it wasn't egregious. The positives are there and detail is pretty remarkable. When Forrest is running towards Jenny's home when they are kids, everything about the image is razor sharp; detail is abundant from the crops all the way out in the distance. Colors are reproduced nicely here too (the scene when Forrest stares out in the sunset while on his boat is just lovely) or when he's running with the crowd behind him.
I'm keeping this short, but while this won't be a Sony type home run on UHD, I still like it over the blu-ray counterpart and I think its worth the upgrade. I'm happy to have spend the $18 on it and I would recommend this. |

I bought this and watched it saturday night. Havent watched it in many years. I thought it looked great and the movie itself is a classic.
I also bought Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan at the same time but havent watched those yet. |

Great upgrade for me, my initial thought that I should have waited for the bargain bin was wrong. |

What are the chances that Paramount will released a better version in the next year? If I recall correctly, there was a similar issue with the Gladiator blu-ray and a better version was made available. There even exchanged the bad copy for the better one through the mail.

But in the case of Gladiator, it was the overused of EE and noise reduction, no? Isn't it a similar issue here, where they could remaster the disk and tone down the noise reduction, following complaints?

Yeah but look how many people complained about Oblivion and T2 4k release. It’s such a niche market I can’t see them going back and fixing the few DNRd scenes. This is the best the film has ever looked. The use of HDR makes the film shine, the DNR only bothered me in a scene or two. It’s really not as big of a deal as some people made it out to be
