well, they weren't screaming in horror. I wonder if we watched the same film? You didn't happen to mix this up with the straight to video release of "The Unquiet Places"?

Maybe RockyIII was mistaking the screams of the audience for screams of the characters? (If he saw this in a theater, that is.)

First time watching it was yesterday, I fookin' loved it. I'm not a major fan of horror, it's just not a genre that floats my boat in general, but those that I like often have something in common, that they generate a tangible atmosphere of dread without necessarily having to drown everything in gore...and A Quiet Place fulfilled that requirement in spades, I haven't been as caught up in a movie as that in quite some time. Does it have a few dumb moments? Sure it does. Did I still brick it when they knocked over the lamp when playing Monopoly? Sure I did. Cracking film.

Drawn out? You make it sound like that scene went on for half an hour. It doesn't. I liked it because it showed how a husband and wife could still enjoy the little things that they used to do before the world ended.

Count me in as one who loved this movie. I thought the pacing was perfect, with plenty of tension. I thought the performances were great as well. Also loved the look and the sound design. I’ll be watching this plenty.

...and, just to add, in a movie where people can't actually TALK to each other to show character then a non-verbal scene like that does wonders for showing how close those two still are in spite of everything that's happened up until that point. Beautiful scene.

Rocky, you're late to this thread and missed the discussions for the last 30 pages, which address many of your issues/questions with often detailed explanations.
I just watched this again this weekend. After a number of viewings, this movie STILL makes anxious, nervous, white-knuckle, and have all the feels... |

This is without a doubt one of the best films of the year (so far). It's thrilling, tense and refreshingly original. I love it. I'm fully expecting the film to get some recognition for it's sound design and script come awards season, even if it only scores nominations. Hey, it could even be the first winner of Best Popular Film :P

You can say the same for most films. Besides, A Quiet Place doesn't really unravel at all. It holds up to scrutiny rather well. It doesn't change the fact that the story itself, a family trying to survive in a world overrun by monsters that hunt by sound, IS very original and like nothing else that the horror genre has offered over the last few years. Yes, Don't Breathe touched on a similar idea, but did not use it effectively. A Quiet Place uses the premise incredibly effectively, has great character writing and has a story that is chilling and gripping. The film received pretty much universal acclaim from critics and a lot of that praise was directed at the script.

Most quality films don't have their internal rules changed to suit a particular plot point at convenient moments. You have to work harder at pulling apart the threads. The creatures behave and even sound like the raptors from Jurassic Park (probably saved money by using the Gary Rydstrom/Ben Burtt sound library from Skywalker Ranch) and the look is straight up Stranger Things meets Venom. The attacks on the kids are similar to the dino attacks in Jurassic Park too. |
