I think about this all the time. Every single one of those goblins has a grotesquely distinct look, and honestly, I prefer them to literally any orc in LOTR. I always read the “put back the practical orc effects” complaints as being along the same lines as “I hate the Hobbit movies because I can only ever repeat the 300-page-story-stretched-painfully-thin fallacy and have no real opinions on anything myself.” Helm’s Deep was half a page on the book; it was 45 minutes in the films. The Hobbit book is episodic, with events compressed in ways that wouldn’t work on film.

Got off on a tangent there, but yeah. I love those goblins, especially the little one in the cart.

Yeah, those winter battlefield scenes feel absolutely nothing like their established Middle-earth—because the locations didn’t exist in New Zealand. They created them wholesale, and the post-processing they used was terrible.

The bizarre, blown out colour grading of BOTFA is something that really stuck out to me and i never liked the way it looked it that regard.

So I guess no one knows this for sure, and we're assuming until an official announcement is made one way or the other.

Peter Jackson used frame interpolation to turn old (15fps I think) footage into 24fps for his WW1 documentary (which had a much smaller budget and fan base than this trilogy), so I don't see why he wouldn't want to do it for this release.

The studio might not be up for it, but if he is able to get them to pony up for completing and including extra footage (and in some cases shooting new footage) for the extended Blu-Rays, then doing some kind of interpolation for this release shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility - especially since that was his original intent. The only reason I can see for not doing so, apart from money, is that the original HFR was meant to fix issues with 3D, and since this won't be in 3D there won't be a need for it.

Still, I really hope there is some kind of HFR release at some point down the line (maybe with the super duper 6 film Middle Earth saga release next year) for those people like me who don't perceive HFR as not looking like a film, and enjoy the look of smooth motion on screen.

It's almost like Helm's Deep lends itself to being stretched, whereas the confrontation with Smaug does not.

What? The confrontation with Smaug is one of the best bits of Desolation.

Sure, if you love madly drawn-out action scenes with no stakes or consequences.

I don't blame Peter Jackson for it, but The Desolation of Smaug feels every bit the cobbled-together extra movie that it is.

With the amazing performances from Freeman and Bandersnatch the whole Smaug confrontation is fantastic.

Also madly drawn out action sequences? Uh you have seen a Peter Jackson movie before haven't you? I'm not sure what else you would expect as he does this in every action movie he makes.

By 'confrontation with Smaug', the poster you're replying to is referring to the drawn-out sequence of the dwarves being chased by Smaug post-Bilbo meeting him.

Brilliant, Warners haven't stuffed them full of loads of extra language tracks. Fully expect that the US and German UHD versions will be different pressings, same video encodes but alternative language options.

Current UHDBD standards don’t allow for HFR 48, so that won’t be on these discs.

Also, see the pictures above this post of the rear packaging. No mention of any HFR.

hello, the English edition of the first two extended films lacks German sound and subtitles. For everything else, it's written, do you think it's a mistake or won't it really be there? special of is missing only for the first two extended ones. I am sorry for my English.

Isn’t Gemini Man 60fps? How could 48 not work?

It doesn't support every conceivable frame rate up to 60fps, it has set framerates it supports. 24, 30, 50, 60, and some others - but not 48.

WB confirmed that Peter Jackson oversaw the UHD masters for all six films. If The Hobbit films aren't in HFR, that's because Peter Jackson either didn't want them in HFR on UHD or wasn't satisfied with the results and felt 24FPS provided a better viewing experience. And if Peter Jackson didn't want them in HFR on UHD, then that's enough for me.
