Let’s go upstairs.
Okay.
(One minute later)
Listen Judy, it’s really late. I gotta go.

I know I've posted this video at least a half dozen times around here but it gives you an idea how good the Laserdisc mono was and how bad the 5.1 is. Wish I could find a direct comparison between the LD and BD mono but the mono on the 2014 sets sounds about as garbled as the 5.1 here.

You know, every town has something like this happen.

(I don’t know why, but for some reason I love the fact that there are two English dudes having a conversation in this movie).

There's been one posted on this site before but for the life of me I can't find it on here or YouTube. The difference between the two mono tracks is pretty surprising.

Maybe Shout isn’t aware of the issues with the boxset’s mono? This is the first I’ve heard of it. When the previous UHD came out, most people were complaining about the downmix and saying that they wish it included the mono from the boxset.

Halloween (1978) - Original Mono vs. 5.1 Remix - YouTube
..well come on then chaps, people are saying they have the laserdisc audio and are emailing shout to say they should use it.. so someone here post a comparison of the two mono audio tracks please

myself i am dubious to say the least unless someone can prove clearly that there is an issue

Ya know, I could have sworn someone posted one years ago, that's how I first heard about there being a better mono option out there. But about a year or so ago, after someone on here posted this one, I went to look for it and found nothing. Thanks for confirming I didn't just dream it!

Okay, I'm probably going to fail miserably, because that's just sort of what I do, but I will attempt to make one. If there's anyone else reading this who's actually good at this kind of thing please step up now.

dreams can be recreated though.. it just requires someone who has the laserdisc and the later mono version at hand.. line out record them and post a link

myself i suspect it is laserdisc nostalgia but i will admit i am wrong if someone can prove it to be so ..

ok cool, cheers. (i am ok at this sort of thing but don't have the laserdisc) .. but line out cable from the laserdisc player to a recording device or laptop. blu ray recording would be easier to do but to keep things fair (so that laserdisc and blu ray audio both go through a physical cable) it would be good to do a cable line out for that too from a blu ray player

What about the mono track on the 2007 Anchor Bay Blu-ray release? I'm pretty sure that's supposed to also be the original mono. How does that compare to the LD and Shout mixes?

..also myself i have the 2007 Halloween blu ray and the mono on that sounded fine to me, noisy but nice and original audio, so I wonder how that compares to the shout box set version. same i would guess

that 2007 blu ray mono version does sound a bit flat but as would be expected for a 1970's budget movie with mono audio, maybe they did some tinkering for the laserdisc to make it sound more hi fidelity..

in any case the main draw for me with these mono inclusions is that we get to hear the original intended sound design, i don't listen to these for their audio fidelity .. actually the opposite is true in my case, i like the grittier more authentic sound as long as there are not mastering issues as was the case for example with the included mad max mono audio track on the 4k (originating from 1999/2000)

I mean they've put out the same DVD with the second film's TV cut since 2012, and it's missing an entire scene.

Another thing is the color space. They screwed it up for the 4K discs of They Live and Prince of Darkness and not even a peep about it from Shout!

Hopefully they got it right this time with these.
