Did you ask them why they DNR'ed the shit out of so many scenes in the film? And I thought you were insisting that War Paint Travolta was always there, so why did you inform them of the problem in the first place if it wasn't a problem?

I'm gonna go looking for this tomorrow, even though it has problems either from FX or excessive DNR.
I haven't see it anywhere. You would think walmarts and what not would have it in stock as this is that kind of seller like Die Hard or something Popular with the older crowd. I hope I find a couple 4Ks with slips tomorrow. Usually the slip is damaged or something so I pass it on by in the store. Takes me forever to pick out films lol. |

Has anybody else had any issue with the movie freezing on the 4K disc? Mine started freezing at the 46:35 mark, and the same thing happened with the 4K disc of Grease as well. It might just be my 4K Blu-ray player, and I'm going to try to get it serviced.

Wanted to pick this up, and the detail is amazing in plenty of scenes compared to the Blu, but the stupid teal & yellow blankets makes it a no buy for me. Why can't they just leave the color timings alone once and for all? Sick to DEATH of every movie being green/teal/yellow for it's home release. If I see a film in the theater and it's there, fine. Of course it will also be on the hove version. But when it wasnt there originally, don't add that ugly shit in. For me it's as displeasing on my eyes, as loudness war style "remastered" audio cd's are on my ears.

It's not as bad of a teal grade as one might think in motion. Caps converted from HDR have slightly wonky colors anyway. I watched it in Dolby Vision and this encode had a 12 bit enhancement layer that nudges it ahead of the HDR10 version on the base video layer. It's the DNR applied to the CG print-out to film shots (there are numerous instances because of the more primitive digital effects integration of the 90's and more shots than you would realize were manipulated via computer in some way or another) that are somewhat disappointing. It's not as bad as some made it out to be and not of the T2 or Bourne Identity or 3:10 to Yuma variety, but it could have been better... though, it's still the best Gump has looked in a while. The Atmos audio is really good for a remix of a mostly 3.1 theatrical track and gets quite aggressive at the appropriate moments. It's the real standout of the UHD disc. I finally watched this last night and was very impressed. Yes, there is a lot of DNR but its not as bad as T2. Still tons of detail and the DV adds good depth, especially in the college football game scenes. The reds of their uniforms really popped. Skin tones and facial details were MUCH improved, especially during the bus bench scenes. This could've been a Sony-style success had they left the grain in. Oh well.

Some titles I have decided to skip over because I don't see much of a difference if anything on Caps a Holic.... yeah yeah, HDR yada yada ;-) (technically isn't this a form of revisionism, even if it looks pleasing to the eye? I am completely on board with WCG, as that is there to cover the range of color that Rec.709 isn't able to display).... oh yeah, Forrest Gump. I have been skipping this one after reading comments about DNR. I just left that screen capture website and I think every single capture is a sizable improvement on the BD. The BD pushes pink way too much and there's that sharpening as one would see on a DVD era HD master.
I think I will have to pick this one up the next time I see it. Hopefully that DNR isn't bothersome in motion. Example, Fulci "Zombie" on Blue Underground...everyone liked the colors, but the DNR in motion was very nasty, unwatchable. Made me prefer the DVD. |

If done correctly, HDR is not revisionist. We've had to live with consumer video for decades that could not reproduce the range of film or even professional video cameras. Now, with HDR capabilities, we have close to a pro dynamic range. It allows you to see more of the original look of the source when not overcooked beyond what the source is capable of (causing crushed blacks and blown out highlights). Like any tool, it can be abused. That does not mean it's wrong to have HDR grading. |

Finally watched it last night on my B7 OLED in DoVi. Many of the scenes had outstanding PQ, especially the scenery during his running and the Vietnam sequence. I agree that some of the poor quality scenes are real head-scratchers, but IMHO, the good far outweighed the bad. I did experience a severe freeze during the shrimping boat sequence which required at least three reboots of the LG UP970. I ended up having to go to one of the last chapters and reverse it all the way back to that sequence. Very frustrating, especially since it happened while I was trying to feed my newborn.

Watched this. Some scenes have visible DNR, but one think I will comment on in regards to this, as well as even Batman Begins...
The thing with the DNR on this, and even that infamous Batman Begins scene with Alfred, is that the DNR doesn't seem as objectionable to me as I think it should. Yes, it looks bad. But instead of looking like wax statues, it just makes the scenes look like they are soft and out of focus....and it really doesn't distract and take me out of the movie all that much. I guess I can deal with this much better than the pasty DNR with motion smearing. That stuff just takes my mind elsewhere, into "I'm watching video" mindset. |

I finally caught up with this last night, will post some (well, a lot of) thoughts on the UHD in a sec but it's been many years since I've seen the movie and didn't quite know what to expect of it. While it's still a bit twee at times it's also got a harder edge to it than what I'd remembered, like seeing Jenny snorting coke (I had to remind myself this is a PG-13) and that bit at the end when Gump is addressing Jenny's grave kicked me square in the feels, I shed a few tears and don't mind saying so. And HOW CUTE is ickle Haley Joel Osment as Forrest Jr?
