If the Original 35mm Magnetic Master Mono Soundtrack Tape still exists I would hope that is the source used for a future release as it would be a true lossless, uncompressed source. This is what Shout Factory has done for Halloween 5, I don't see why it can't be done for the most important film in the franchise. If that source is lost and/or destroyed then the Criterion Laserdisc Mono Mix would be completely satisfactory, just like how SF dealt with Halloween 4.

So how come Criterion never released the first film again on Blu Ray? It seems like they are capable of producing a definitive 4K set.
This whole debacle is making want to watch Ghosts or Mars for some reason, I'll be back. |

How definitive is Scream Factory release compared to the Lionsgate release? I own Lionsgate’s UHD but dunno if this is worth the purchase.

As for the Criterion mono, there have been instances where an element is held exclusively and won’t be available to others. The original masters are not but the completed work is locked. Scream can’t just rip a laserdisc and go with it, they still need approval. |

As it is now from what we know, the mono track is better than the UHD's fold down mono track. Plus it has several extras that are not on the Lionsgate. New 4K scan from the negative should also hold more detail that the UHD from the IP. Nothing is really definitive about the actual presentation until it comes out. I think he's talking about the quality of the two releases and how they compare. |

I've only listened to the Lionsgate Dolby 7.1 TrueHD and the 2.0 down mix from the Lionsgate UHD recently, since I've only been watching this on that 4K disc. I never had a disc with the 2.0 from Anchor Bay, I did have the '07 blu-ray with the PCM 5.1 and Dolby Surround 5.1, the PCM sounded somewhat better than the down mix on the UHD, iirc.

I'm really not aware of much when it comes to audio tracks so I shouldn't be one to speak on the details of these. From what I understand the 7.1 on the Lionsgate has processing/noise reduction issues, but I don't think anything is missing on it. |
