If the Original 35mm Magnetic Master Mono Soundtrack Tape still exists I would hope that is the source used for a future release as it would be a true lossless, uncompressed source. This is what Shout Factory has done for Halloween 5, I don't see why it can't be done for the most important film in the franchise. If that source is lost and/or destroyed then the Criterion Laserdisc Mono Mix would be completely satisfactory, just like how SF dealt with Halloween 4.

Depends what the artwork looks like.

So how come Criterion never released the first film again on Blu Ray? It seems like they are capable of producing a definitive 4K set.

This whole debacle is making want to watch Ghosts or Mars for some reason, I'll be back.

How definitive is Scream Factory release compared to the Lionsgate release? I own Lionsgate’s UHD but dunno if this is worth the purchase.

Anchor Bay/Starz got distribution rights to the Trancas Halloween films in the late ‘90s. There was no point in two boutiques releasing expensive special editions in the infancy of DVD.

As for the Criterion mono, there have been instances where an element is held exclusively and won’t be available to others. The original masters are not but the completed work is locked. Scream can’t just rip a laserdisc and go with it, they still need approval.

Nothing is ever definitive until the filmmakers or rights holders say so.

I guess we'll find out when it comes out.

As it is now from what we know, the mono track is better than the UHD's fold down mono track. Plus it has several extras that are not on the Lionsgate. New 4K scan from the negative should also hold more detail that the UHD from the IP. Nothing is really definitive about the actual presentation until it comes out.

I think he's talking about the quality of the two releases and how they compare.

Wait so even the scuffed mono is better than the fold down? And is it better than the current multi-channel even though it's scuffed? I guess the Atmos could be the only one that matters if it's done right.

I've only listened to the Lionsgate Dolby 7.1 TrueHD and the 2.0 down mix from the Lionsgate UHD recently, since I've only been watching this on that 4K disc. I never had a disc with the 2.0 from Anchor Bay, I did have the '07 blu-ray with the PCM 5.1 and Dolby Surround 5.1, the PCM sounded somewhat better than the down mix on the UHD, iirc.

Wait.. the Lionsgate UHD had an ATMOS track? Did it have missing/ changed elements like the bluray?
I know it's sacrilege around here but I'm most interested in an ATMOS track built from the original elements..

Woops, I have to correct myself. It's not Dolby Atmos, it's Dolby 7.1 TrueHD on the 2018 Lionsgate blu-ray.

I'm really not aware of much when it comes to audio tracks so I shouldn't be one to speak on the details of these. From what I understand the 7.1 on the Lionsgate has processing/noise reduction issues, but I don't think anything is missing on it.

The '07 disc should have a lossy mono track (this disc was reused for the Lionsgate 4K).

Is that the same mono track used in the Scream/Anchor Bay boxset?

It does. It isn't great, but it's better than that awful 2013/25th Anniversary mono track.

Good to know, I should have that disc with the 2018 UHD, so I'll pop it in tonight and compare the audio tracks. Thank you for the clarification!

Well, yeah, just by virtue of the fact that the fold-down mono is not the original mono at all. There are even a couple points where the music is different.

I thought only the original mono was the track that has processing/noise reduction issues. The 7.1 on the Lionsgate disc has processing/noise reduction too?

I thought someone on here at some point said it did, so I'm only speaking second hand. Please don't take my word on it. I'm going to listen to the tracks across the UHD and '07 blu-rays this evening and compare.
