Thanks for posting these. I agree the Criterion's mono is superior to the 2014 Blu-ray. The only thing that was odd about the Criterion's mono is in the outside scenes at times it sounds like a heavy wind hitting the microphone and is distracting. The 2014 Blu-Ray's mono doesn't seem to have that sound. Other than this I much prefer the Criterion's mono.

Sorry; I don't mean to be rude, but this is a little difficult to unpack.

A recording from a 1979 video device inside a darkened theater is not going to give you anywhere near an accurate representation of the color projected onto the screen.

And was this from a news crew? I doubt a random audience member would have been able sneak a bulky 1970s video camera into a movie theater.

Clearly they want back in time so they can then tell people how it looked on here.

I know which video you're talking about. Pretty sure the uploader of that tried to sync a tape of the audience reacting (probably from a tape recorder in a coat pocket) to a modern copy of the film, but due to the speed irregularities of tape, it goes more and more out of sync as it progresses. Someone did something similar with the original Star Wars.

If you're talking about this video only the audio is from the screening.

“This is actual AUDIO (with the appropriate video scenes added — a little out of sync, sorry) taken inside a Hollywood Boulevard movie theater in October 1979. I lived in Hollywood, California at the time. But failed to see the film in 1978 when it originally came out. The following year, in October 1979, it was re-released and playing at the Vine Theater (on Hollywood and Vine), where it was doubled-featured with The Toolbox Murders (also from 1978). I took an old Radio Shack cassette tape recorder inside the theater with me and sat in the front row to try and capture some of the music audio from both films. The Toolbox Murders’ audience was quiet. HALLOWEEN’s audience was not.”

If the new UHD has a little more blue in the night sequences, it’ll be perfect IMO. I don’t think the daytime scenes were ever supposed to look as warm as the 2007 disc(and definitely not the revisionist THX DVD), going by the 35mm prints I’ve seen in theaters.

Yep. Somebody did something similar with the "No, I am your father" scene from ESB:

On a similar note about those coat pocket tape recordings people did, one was done for the entirety of the original Star Wars movie, and was used by originaltrilogy.com to re-create the original stereo track! Kinda neat.

Lmao
But they just don't look right for October 31st in Illinois. The grass isn't bright green and the whole desaturated look just doesn't sit well with me. The warm tones of the THX disc and the 2007 BD are closer to feeling like how the film should look...to me. I mean, I guess it's great we can all pick and choose. Very interested to see what the new 4K disc looks like and which was it swings or if it's somewhere in the middle.

Yes, but that’s not what the movie looked like originally. It was a low budget production shot in California. It didn’t have all of that digital Fall stuff the THX disc added.

Not alot but they don't match in that comparison.
yes is a very good point.. if you are going to compare fairly then the loudness levels need to be around the same (as mentioned above though the laserdisc would still win)

Ugh. I know. I don't care. Warm Autumn colors fit for a movie set in Illinois in Autumn.

I think the 2014 transfer looks fine. The toned down color in the daytime feels right for the setting of the movie. The night scenes are cool with a little blue look, while not being overwhelming blue like the 1999 DVD which was pumped up for SD crt TVs.

Okay, I raised the volume of the 2014 audio 3.8dB like you said and I have to admit it does sound much better. In fact I can't even hear much difference in the opening credits.

Yeah Judith Myers, Myers. Row 18, block 20. Yeah you know, you know every town has something like this happen. I remember over in Russellville, old Charlie Bowles, about fifteen years ago. One night, he finished dinner...and he excused himself from the table and he went out to the garage...he got himself a hacksaw. And then he went back into the house...and he kissed his wife and his two children goodbye, and then he proceeded....

WHERE ARE WE?

yes the credits sound similar although the fast tapping sound is way more pronounced in the blu ray, also would be interesting to hear the whole thing

..the movie footage though is definitely missing the low end and high end in the blu ray, which makes the laserdisc version scarier listening, in my opinion

I always wondered why I found Halloween less good/scary over the years and the anaemic sounding music especially could very well be the reason

it's interesting to hear the rain differences back to back that Carpenter mentioned in the commentary.. laserdisc - water sprayed on car in sound studio vs blu ray - slightly more realistic (maybe) rain on car .. i think i might prefer the former since to me that sounds more like real water on car from an interior perspective even if it's not real rain

Started watching this the other day and my son asked why it didn’t have the original mono track. He was so disappointed he started vomiting uncontrollably. I tried to tell him the new release would have it but the night was already ruined.

If your son uncontrollably vomits over the absence of an original mix, boy I'd hate to see his reaction to this site.
