I watched the 4K of this last night, avoid at all cost. Too dark, soft images in a few spots, doesn't have the proper Russian subtitle text font and the dialogue is barely audible in a few places, stick with the Blu-ray, it has a lot of the same problems but at least I can see what's going on, I'm only keeping it because the steelbook is better looking than the standard artwork. In contrast, I watched the old Blu-ray of Crimson Tide the night before and that thing looked like a reference quality 4k disc. I sure hope Disney doesn't mess up the transfer when it finally comes to 4K.

No, same thing on the blu-ray, not remastered. The same release from 2008.

I think it looks great. There is ZERO issues about it being "too dark". Sure, it looks soft in spots, but that's completely inherent to the source material. There is a lot of closed-in location shooting on the set, and with the requirement to keep focus based on the lenses utilized during each shot... it can be challenging maintaining focus pull. Also, a LOT of shots are about focusing on a specific person/object in frame, and that might have a depth of field that requires 6 inches of focus amidst the rest of the frame being sacrificed, thus negating any chance of sharp precision within the entire frame of a shot. I would even wager that some (or all) of that is intentional, to give the sense of claustrophobia that comes from being in a submarine. Believe me, I can tell you that being in a sub can be... less than freeing. Basically, though, if you have issues with the darkness... I wager it's somethin' to do with your display chain from main source to final output. |
