Adapting the original story as well as taking material that Tolkien had written or written about after he wrote The Hobbit and incorporating it into the overall “Middle-earth cinematic universe”. Stuff like Bard having children, Legolas being there, Thranduil having a name, White Council stuff etc. obviously wasn’t in the book, but still works.

And of course, just like with LotR, there was completely made up stuff which still works in terms of world building (like, I love all the extra time spent in Rivendell and Esgaroth for example) AND if we didn’t have that embellishment, we wouldn’t even see the final battle. It all works for the sake of making movies.

there was an excellent 'color timing' featurette on the 'Fellowship' regarding this that threw all that time and effort out the window when they regraded the movie for it's extended edition.

I remember reading Hobbit as a kid and what I saw was almost unrecognizable. I'm sure Jackson didn't want it to be three movies so in that regard his hands were tied.

I may actually pick up the Hobbit trilogy because the Gollum and Smaug scenes are every bit as good as what happened in LotR. Also, there is a ton of bonus material so watching it may actually be more fun than the movies.

I never could get into these but I might have to tag in with this set.

I know these are wildly popular. Happy for fans.

I hope these 4ks are like their limited edition DVDs that have both the Theatrical and Extended cuts in the same disc. That's why I haven't bothered in getting the Blu-rays. Want to have both for historical purpose, plus I find the Theatrical cuts for Fellowship and Two Towers better.

The extended versions seems bloated to me. Just because they're longer, doesn't mean that they're better... I prefer the theatrical releases. Even the director: Even Peter Jackson prefer the theatrical versions himself.

personally I thought the ending of 'Two Towers' in the extended edition was perfect as in the book the ents finish off the orcs; likewise the character arc for Saruman in 'Return' wasn't perfect, but it at least explained his sudden odd disappearance from the theatrical cut ... and the Mouth of Sauron was a cool addition too.

Probably comparable to Matrix sequels.

Cautiously optimistic. If it's just the theatrical cuts, very little interest. If it's only the extended cuts, a lot more interest but I'll probably hold off for a good price. Theatrical & Extended? I might just go all in at pre-order and worry about the backlash from my wife later .

I haven't watched the theatrical cuts since they were originally released on DVD. The Extended Editions? Every couple of years or so. And yes, please fix that color timing on Fellowship...

Hell yes!!! This has been my most wanted 4K release. I’m hoping the extended versions are on one disc instead of two. I can’t wait.

I'm predicting theatricals. Then staggered extended editions for each anniversary. Followed by an extended boxset.

They didn't do it for the Blu-ray, so why for the 4K?
In my opinion they'll release everything at once and this is the reason it took so long.
