The covers aren't my favorite thing but I do like them. In any case, they're way better than what Warner Bros. has been doing with their 4K releases. Those Burton/Schumacher Batman covers, Gremlins, the Kubrick covers...

I actually LIKE the newly commissioned art. And of course, since they know people want the original art, too, the interior covers are reversible. I reversed mine. So it's the best of both worlds - the new art on the slipcase, and the original art when I take the disc case out. If it really offends someone, they can just toss the cardboard case and they still have the disc with the OG art.

In this case (no pun intended) I'm glad they don't change everything they do based on scattered gripes on the internet.
When the announcement was made including the unveiling of the new artwork I saw a pretty hefty flogging directed at Shout Factory on social media and forums. That of course has died down a bit but like you mentioned there are still a few that continue to rag on the artwork I am doing exactly like you just mentioned: for H2-H5 I plan to throw away the slipcase, reverse the interior covers to include the original artwork and stuff them into the 2014 Halloween Boxset.

The audio portion is more of a concerning issue to me and rather than hold back and accept it as being good enough, I would rather send Shout Factory a politely written critique so that they are aware of the issue and hopefully address it in the future. I encourage everyone else to do the same thing so long as it is done in a respectful manner. They aren't going to change anything if they don't get the feedback whether it's positive or negative.

Their initial announcement posts on FB and Twitter received a lot of replies that were hating on the designs.

I wasn't a fan of them originally, but they've grown on me after seeing them more and more.

My personal viewpoint on them is that SF's big thing is about appealing to the collector's, and it feels like having the slipboxes feature the original art would've been what most collector's wanted. While SF's slipcovers have always featured their new artwork, their 4K releases of They Live and Prince of Darkness featured the original key art on the slip, so there was a reasoning for thinking the same would be on the Halloween releases.

That said, it's the on-disc content that matters at the end of the day.

Does criticizing anything a company does that we don't like make us a Karen now? I'd sure like to go Karen on WB's ass over that trash Gremlins steelbook art.

It certainly would have been cheaper for Shout to use existing art instead of commissioning new stuff. So seems like they need an education if they don't know how to save money and make their customers happier at the same time.

And why can't more companies take advantage of social media and just poll their customers as to what they want ahead of time?

Criticizing doesn’t make a person a Karen, only when demands are involved.

This.

"I don't like the new artwork. I wish they hadn't done it. I only want original art."

vs.

"This new trash fan-art crap sucks, what is wrong with Shout, bunch of lazy idiots over there."

(Not refering to the post I originally replied to, which was not disrespectful like that, which is why I replied instead of just ignoring - just providing an example like I see daily here. And we wonder why insiders, etc. rarely interact here these days.)

Yeah, that's why I mentioned it - not to be contrarian, but because I actually do like the new art (much more than the F13th Box, actually, and if I recall, most people salivated over that which was new "fan" art, too). I also like the consistency between the releases.

Let's face it...while I want the OG art included (as they did), and I reversed my cover to show it...the OG art is all nostalgia, it isn't very good artistically on its own (especially for the sequels). I see why they commissioned these - which is way better than the photoshop hatchet jobs most places seem to be doing.

I actually think the artwork for 1-3 is very good on its own (and Curse is relatively good for the simplicity they went with). It's only when Returns rolled around that the artwork became a bit lazy.

You must have been away when these covers were first revealed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a reaction, and yes it was pretty widespread.

Sorry to be the contrarian but I actually like H4 & H5's posters. Sure they're simple but they set the mood for me.

The one's that I really don't care for are the Miramax headshot/photoshop jobs for H20 and Resurrection. And that's something I've never liked about any of their posters. It's always the same collection of floating heads on their posters as if the selling point of the movie is who's starring in it and not trying to set the tone or sell you on the idea of the plot...

Yep, the first three poster are just great, regardless of nostalgia; striking designs, great font, great composition. I mean, the knife weilding hand gradually changing/merging into a jack o lantern on the OG artwork, nostalgia be damned, it's flat out fantastic.

I don't like to shit on any novice artist, but the new art work is amataurish and I'd imagine the artist was either a friend of someone at shout or incredibly cheap; and even then, they really dont have the technical skills to be getting a job like this imo.

My problem with them is that neither use the mask in the movie, and the house on Return's poster isn't even in the film.

H20's is what it is. That was the style of posters in the 1990s and it makes sense to advertise Jamie Lee Curtis's return. But it was definitely going out of style by the time Resurrection's poster came out, and - similarly to Return and Revenge - they didn't use an accurate photo of Jamie Lee Curtis for it.

At the risk of being mocked, I actually have always had a soft spot for the French poster of Returns. It's a bit hokey, but I think it had the potential:

The artwork for the 1978 movie is genius! The art for these 4k covers was done by Joel Robinson, who has illustrated a LOT of covers for Scream Factory since their inception so I wouldn't call him novice (even though I'm not a big fan myself). His style is all wrong for Halloween though.

You mean the Wallace house from HI, yeah that is pretty funny but again I like the presence of the house and the shape creeping around the side of it. Definitely captures a mood for me. Same with H5, the image of Michael's mask leering behind Jamie and the knife staggered between them, definitely lets you know this will be a darker film.

That French post looks like it was based on a still image from the film so I definitely approve of that!
