Alas, we were dead wrong (and Krampus seems to be continuing the trend, even thought I really like the new artwork for that one!).
Honestly, their artwork strategy makes sense to me. They Live and Prince of Darkness already had the commissioned artwork used for the initial release, so they stuck with the theatrical art for the UHD releases. SF had never released the Halloween films (individually) or Krampus prior to their UHD announcements, so they get commissioned artwork (with reversible cover art). I'd expect Army of Darkness (and any other UHD upgrades of their earlier catalog) to get just the theatrical artwork, and any new additions to get the commissioned art treatment.

As far as WHY they go with commissioned artwork at all? Simple. So SF has artwork they can further market. It's a business at the end of the day.

It almost looks like the one in that photo is the one used in part 4. It may have just been a lower quality, less detailed Shatner mask. This Shatner mask has less smooth skin, and seems more like part 1's sculpt:

No, it’s still that dvd version on the streaming sites. I just used it to to sync up the ld audio. Once a rip of this disk comes out, I’ll sync it to that and create a usb stick of this movie. I own the disk, just don’t have the means to rip it.

Just to be clear, for people confused by all the mono issues Halloween has had over the past 20 years... this new release absolutely has "the correct mono"; it's just the filtered version that lacks some of the punch and nuances of the non-filtered mono, which hasn't been on a release since the 90's, I believe. But make no mistake, it is the original mono track; not a fold-down, not a remix. It is "correct", if not ideal.

Do I think the covers are all wrong for Halloween? Yes, but is it bad art? No. But it's all wrong for Halloween and I will willingly never display them for anyone, ever.
The artist is still a human being, and I'm sure they get discouraged when all they hear is hate fired at them. Such is the internet sadly.

Was the non-filtered mono ever on anything besides the LD?

Tommy Lee Wallace makes a Michael Myers mask here and it comes out absolutely perfect. So you can be sure the "root" mask used here must have been an accurate replica of the original.

I notice many other catalog titles of theirs showing up on streaming services like Prime and Tubi, represented by their newly commissioned artwork. Black Christmas is one off the top of my head.

I see Joel R. at pretty much every convention I go to, he is well aware how people feel about his covers, doesn't mind it one bit. His response when I asked him about it once was "They ain't the ones paying me, so they can think whatever they want" Super cool guy as well.

No, the only time the original mono mix has ever been "unfiltered" is the 1994 Criterion Laserdisc release. Death Waltz used the same 35MM Mag Tape source that Criterion used for their 40th Anniversary Vinyl of the Original Soundtrack, they just bypassed the dialogue stem and captured the music and effects.

There are some YouTube commenters who say part 4's mask was based on a Kirk mold, like this guy...but it didn't get the right TLC in the conversion process.

"Believe it or not a lot of people don’t know but Halloween 4 mask was a Don Post Captain Kirk mask that was made in the late 80s by Don Post's son and the reason why it looks odd is they didn’t spray paint the mask they painted it and it was so thick it hid the features and the sideburns weren’t taken off and the eye cuts were different and painted eyebrows but under all that paint it’s practically a 75 Kirk"

Oh it’s bad all right. It’s for the ComicCon crowd and the people who decorate entire rooms in their houses with horror/sci-fi/comic memorabilia and toy figurines. Truly. If Shout were releasing only the first film, I can imagine them going with something different, but this series of releases is for fans of the entire franchise, who are a different beast.

You're not going to find more superfans of the franchise than you have in this thread. And I am quite sure the superfans are the ones who most want the original poster art. This pop art stuff is aimed strictly at casual viewers, who need a new cover to recognize that this is a new release they don't have already.

Yep, that's exactly it. For people who go to best buy and are like oh there's a new Halloween release? It's true that new art helps to differentiate from previous release but most fans could care less. Remember the new Jaws artwork for the 4k? Imo the greatest poster of all time, there's no need for any new art for big classics like Jaws and Halloween.

Well if they did this it would be a good opportunity for Shout Factory to get a better audio source of the Original Mono Mix for Halloween (1978). Believe me, it would not be expensive for a mastering engineer to transfer the 35mm Mag Tape and send the digital file over to SF to put on the disc.

They went for that art solely to piss Bob off. And it worked!

The way I look at it, VHS was the golden age of cover art, most of them having the original theatrical poster as their art. Then came dvd, with godawful photoshop covers, imo the worst of the lot by far. Blu ray has mostly been plagued by newly commissioned art but at least with boutique labels we have the options for the original art, so it was a step in the right direction. With 4k we are finally getting back to the original posters, thought obviously not always but with companies like Kino and Arrow we are getting more and more of them.

I’m definitely displaying these without the slipcases when I get them, but I’ll probably still keep those. I kind of like that the art looks like it could be a series of old horror books. Not enough to keep them on the cases, but I’m not bothered by them at all.
