I don’t think I’ll ever be as lucky again as I was the day I found H1’s novel for $20 and 2&3’s for 1 cent each. Thank you, naive Amazon Marketplace sellers

H1’s is a very interesting read. I’ve only read it once so I could be remembering wrong, but there’s a whole prologue set in Celtic times with a deformed man who murders people over a girl rejecting him, followed by the village killing him, then we get a fleshed out 1963 opening with the Myers family, as well as time spent at Smith’s Grove indicating that Michael was harming patients. Also he hears voices like his grandfather did, his motivation is very sexual, and he may or may not be the reincarnation of the murderer in the prologue…or something like that lol. His mask is also described to have rosy cheeks and red lips

I reached out to Shout! and they were quick to respond and let me know that they’re waiting for one last piece to complete the deluxe sets before they’re able to ship. Not sure if there will be updates over the weekend, but good to have an update regardless.

I’ve seen a few copies of HIII in second-hand book exchanges back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, but never the others.

Did they let you know what piece? Last week they said the vinyl and collectible boxes were in the warehouse ready to go.

Maybe it’s the pin set?

They mentioned last week that the pins would arrive at the warehouse on the 28th, which was this past Tuesday. I didn't buy the pin bundle anyway. The only thing it sounded like they were still waiting on was the Halloween II UHD, but I can't imagine all of these other retailers that are now selling it got it before the actual freaking distributor did.

Tried to read the first one but it was terrible. Its kinda like bad fan fiction. I'm not really into novelizations tho. Supposedly there are a few good ones out there, like Alan Dean Foster's Alien.

I tried to read it too. I read several pages and then briefly skimmed through the rest just to see how certain scenes were described. I wasn’t a fan of the prologue, having Michael speak as a child, and giving him a backstory for why he’s evil. If he’s possessed by the soul of the killer in the prologue it makes Michael no longer evil and you just feel bad for him. I also couldn’t take the descriptions of the sex and nudity seriously. There’s so much description of breasts, nipples, pubic hair, etc. It was laughable.

Watching this right now and YEESH there is some ugly compression, at least in the HDR10 layer. Like grain that looks like it actually freezes for a second at a time before shifting into another frozen pattern - the kind of gross crap you get on streaming but rarely on disc. I’d say it’s disappointing but it’s not like Scream Factory has a great reputation for technical quality in the first place.

Just finished up. I hate to say this but I found the HDR10 compression so distractingly poor that I actually prefer the Lionsgate UHD. Which sucks because that one doesn’t have the original mono and I can’t stand the remix. Oh well, I’m not a fan of the movie anyway so I’ll survive. Maybe (hopefully) the compression fares better in Dolby Vision.

You're not a fan of the movie, but you own the two 4K releases? Far out, man.

Blah-ray Audio Analysis

Quote:
1994 Criterion LaserDisc: Still the gold standard - it's a wonderful unadulterated transfer of the magnetic mono master.

2000 Anchor Bay DVD: Plenty of hiss reduction and much less bass than the Criterion LaserDisc. It sounds very bad, I'd say - certainly worse than the restored mono of Carrie (1976), which was already bad enough. The sync of the music/effects relative to the dialogue is slightly different than on the LaserDisc, which suggests this is a different mono mixdown. I haven't detected any content-related discrepancies, though, so it's fair to still consider it the theatrical mono mix. This mastering was probably completed in the late '90s and it's the same one that's been used across various releases over the past 21 years.

2007 Anchor Bay Blu-ray: Same as the DVD.

2013 Anchor Bay Blu-ray (35th anniversary): A poorly downmixed version of the 5.1 mix. I say poorly because some phase cancellation has occurred, so everything sounds extremely odd and muted.

2014 Shout Factory Blu-ray: A lossless version of the DVD mastering.

2018 Lionsgate UHD: The AC-3 mono track on this disc is a more competently downmixed version of the 5.1 mix with no phase cancellation.

2021 Shout Factory UHD: A lossy transcode of the DVD mastering. Funny that the previous Shout blu-ray actually was lossless! Anyway, this sounds bad because it's the same horrible manipulated DVD-era track, not because it's 'fake' lossless.
Yikes...
