The definite release is the SteelBook, which will be coming soon. Knowing Paramount, they’ll drop one for My Fair Lady too. The eventual complete rerelease is definitely an opinion, based solely on the way the studios do business. Probably after enough people buy Indiana Jones that will get a rerelease too, if not sooner when IJ 5 comes out. They’ll either be in a collectible ark or a collectible fridge, the jury’s still out.

I don’t think it’s bad, I just think that it can look even better with more breathing room. Having watched Gone With The Wind on Blu-ray (which had no issues but also could’ve been even better on two discs), I thought to myself hopefully they don’t do this with epics on 4K. The decision to put TTC on one disc was definitely a case of saving money and cutting corners. Admit it: if Lawrence Of Arabia came on one disc, and we all paid $120 for a one disc 4K of LoA (because literally 90% of people just bought the set for that movie), collectors would be screaming from the rooftops. With Ben-Hur, Gone With The Wind, The Godfather, Once Upon A Time In America, and various other epics still unavailable on 4K, having The Ten Commandments on one disc sets a bad precedent.

It's only bad if it's a bad release. Since it's not a bad release, I don't see what the problem is.

Personally, my biggest gripe with the release is the lack of special features from the older Blu-ray. Considering the upcoming SteelBook has the 1923 version (and presumably the special features disc from 2011), I’ll unfortunately be double dipping.

So, you’re saying they’re going to spread it out over two discs at that point?

The only thing that’s being spread is bullshit.

The issue is with some funky motion smearing and not the bitrate, definitely. It happened a little bit on My Fair Lady too. I still think that it is some artifact having to do with the grain management process during the restoration phase. Possibly overly aggressive.

There's no way that Paramount would do anything but re-issue the same single disc 4k all over again.

Probably not. The 70th or 75th anniversary is most likely when that will happen. Studios love anniversaries.

My Fair Lady is three hours long. Considering 2 hours of 4K take up about 85-90 gigs, My Fair Lady was pushing the limits, and that’s why the smearing showed up “a little bit”. The Ten Commandments is a whole hour longer, which would make the smearing even more apparent. Also, with the exception of Indiana Jones and the upcoming Godfather 4K, Paramount’s 4K movies have been old scans. My Fair Lady was from 2014 or 2015, and The Ten Commandments was from 2011. Both are great scans, but it still does nothing to negate the fact that they’re using old scans instead of doing new ones. They probably still haven’t decided whether to embrace 4K yet. They got burned in the last format war, and they are afraid of it happening again. This time the war is between physical media and streaming, and we know and they know that streaming is going to win. They’re trying to keep us as happy as possible, while losing the least money possible. We’re frankly lucky that the Indiana Jones movies didn’t come packed on one or two 4K discs, and we’ll be lucky if that doesn’t happen with The Godfather as well. The occasional good 4K and the Paramount Presents line are clearly tokens for us physical media fans. Hoping that changes, but certainly not expecting it to change.

Paramount is not going to re-release this on two discs. Dream all you want.

Studios don't like spending the same money twice - especially in so short a time.

It still costs a lot to re-author and re-press a title in 4K.

thankfully they released Hunt for Red October outside of the box set, now waiting for 'Patriot Games' and 'Clear and Present Danger' as stand alone discs

They are already available as standalone releases on some markets. E.g. on the Nordic market they have been available since 2018 and I got them for approx $11 each last year.

The "smearing" on these has literally nothing to do with the bitrate. And I'm literally laughing out loud at the notion of Par not having "decided to embrace 4K yet". Just ridiculous

For lack of time and patience, I am going to ask a question most hate to hear in these threads. I've got one last gift card and was considering this movie as part of my purchase. Is this a good transfer or it really fudged up and some had said. I'm sure this has been beaten to death, but I just came in and I really don't want to wade through the whole thread. Sorry.

I don’t see anything wrong with it, others do. It’s only around $20. I’d get it, unless you’re a special features junkie, in which case the old Blu-ray is online and is still awesome, and there’s a SteelBook coming out soon with more features.

So what’s the smearing from?

Thanks. Special features are important, but so is the presentation. And if I'm going to get a movie, I'm going for the 4K option if possible. Not that I hate Blu-ray or anything, but I watch it less and less these days. I've been bitten by that 4K bug.

Good point. Considering the standard 4K is down to $20, it’s up to you if you get it. The 4K disc has the commentary from the old Blu, while the two included 1080 discs have the commentary, three trailers and the premiere. Or, gamble and wait for the SteelBook which will contain the 4K and “the 1923 version”, which most likely means it’s the special features disc from the old Blu-ray. Up to you which one you get, I’ll certainly be double dipping.
