It definitely has finer grain, because it’s from the negative, except in spots where it’s obscured by compression artifacts. Would be a beautiful image if not for the compression issues. (Which may not be noticeable in motion anyway.)

And Dolby Vision might improve it.

Good points. It's one thing when you see macro blocking all over a clear sky like in the US release of Total Recall, but for the most part even from close viewing (like say 7~8ft to a 65 inch), you typically don't see much encoding weaknesses when screened in DV in my experience.

Man, I had no intention of getting this, but those screenshots look amazing. Ordered from Bullmoose last night and already shipped. Love Bullmoose.

The new Shout 4k disc checks all the boxes. Sketchy compression? Check! Shite filtered weak mono audio? Check! Better detail? Check! More pleasing color palette? Check! Better shadow detail, depth, and contrast? Check! Loud punchy new Atmos track? Check! Another flawed Shout release that's still nonetheless less deficient and more filmic/pleasing than the already-pretty-decent-but-also-flawed Lionsgate 4k release? Check! Leaves room for a future, definitive release? Check! Glad I bought this disc? Check!

As usual, I think the actual disc in motion is a better, bigger improvement in various areas than the Caps let on.

We all half-expected to see better color timing on this release. But one thing I totally didn't expect was how much better the darker scenes could look, with much-improved density, contrast and light management. It makes some of the Lionsgate night-time interior scenes look positively flat and murky. It' a pleasant surprise, since much of the film is quite dark.

And I actually tried watching it in HDR10, on a 75" oled, and didn't vomit or convulse even once. Yes, DV does improve on the compression woes. It's totally survivable, in motion, despite claims to the contrary. No small animals were killed in the testing, and no human subjects actually suffered.

Will I go back to any of the prior discs, to view this film in future? Nope. I even got so ballsy and blasphemous as to pick up a second, backup copy of Shout 4k uhd H1978 for my film library.

On to the sequels. This horse is beat down dead. In a good way.

And for folks who have a strong dislike of Shout's historically weaker work product, and also have a particular sensitivity to compression issues, but still bought this release anyway? Shoulda got a Falcon.

I ordered all 5 movies and Best Buy only sent 2-4 even though it says all 5 was delivered. Things like this and receiving scratched discs are making it easier for me to go all digital.

Why not just try another retailer?

I canceled my Amazon order and went with Best Buy. Picking them up today. Amazon quoted me the same delivery time.

Shout, easily. Better color timing. Better quality mono. Damn the 400% zoom compression artifacts.

If only the poster art was on the slipbox and the slip art on the cases; then you could keep them covered up.

I actually would rather have it on the sleeves rather than the slip. That way if i drop the slip, I still have it. Then again, I guess as long as the sleeve is reversible that would be better. Could them have original art displayed on both.

caps are a bit disappointing, weird some look better than others
for compression and noise reduction
or maybe that's down to different prints used ?

still better colour overall imo + Atmos

so just the usual kind of Shout release then ?

Scream has a BLUE TINT, and the FILM looks wiped out drunk to me. Look at the SKYLINE, the WHITE paint on the road is BLUE, the street sign is WHITE on Lionsgate and BLUE on the Scream, The Metal Guard rails look Silver/Gray on the Lionsgate, and Blue on the Scream. I used my eyeballs LOL! The ROAD is BLUE it's quite obvious what happened here. Revisionist use of HDR crayons. No version is perfect but these colors don't work for me.

Some kind of midnight blue filter seems applied imho.
