You can also see the difference in grain. Going back to the OCN has removed all that grain you pick up going from a negative to an IP. Good stuff!

Bravo!
Only thing I liked about LIONSGATE transfer was that it was sharp.
I hated that there was hardly any color.

Agreed.......with the additional caveat that such Studio Canal 4k discs often glitch like a demented fiend on my several blu ray players, often have vulgar posterization, have noticeably worse compression, even weirder revisionist color timing, and a host of other other objectionable characteristics that make them pretty weak technical releases, for me, in several cases. Am I unfairly generalizing a bit? Yup. But they earned it. And if this Halloween 1978 4k uhd had been a UK Studio Canal release, I don't think I would've bothered importing it. I'm too busy still trying to get my Studio Canal 4k disc for Prince of Darkness to give me something other than billions of blue-vomit digital cubes and a host of swirling candy cane stripey screens......That's on a stone-reliable Oppo 203. And Rowdy Roddy Piper has such a severe scarlet sunburn, he still won't be able to sit down for a week....YMMV. While Shout often screws the pooch, this particular Shout 4k has a bit less pooch-screwery than many of the homely Studio Canal discs in my collection, so I won't kick it out of bed for eating crackers.

Funny, I always felt that the Lionsgate release looked a bit TOO digitally "sharpened" which I suspected might have caused the seemingly excess grain from the IP scan to almost start looking a bit like mild scanner noise.....on top of the weird desaturation I was never too keen on. These are simply observations based on my assumptions, and I could be entirely wrong. It still didn't keep me from watching the Lionsgate 4k disc, and even using it as my go-to for a short while. As it was a legit 4k uhd product, I still preferred it over the prior blu rays. I still have it, and probably won't sell it.

and now......

Yeah I should clarify it’s nowhere near as botched as a Studio Canal disc in HDR 10

2 dumb questions. the past few posts have mentioned "switching" between DV and HDR10. I assume that has to be done on the player or the TV?

noticed the first UHD from 18 looks a tad warmer in color tone. I do wonder what does "original blu color timing" on disc 3 really mean? did they go back to that really blue look of the 99 THX dvd or the washed out colors of the DIVIMAX dvd or a bit in between?

Get the LG service remote and follow these instructions.

You can also do it with a Logitech Harmony remote.

Editing my post to add this note:

This is important as technically disabling it voids the warranty, so you'll want to reinstate it before any service.

QUE???? It's arguably THE most desaturated presentation the film has ever received on a blu ray or dvd. Some of the scenes are literally ashen grey. Maybe adjust the settings of your viewing screen?

Bit of Pandora's box, but I'll have a go... with more info than you wanted.

1990's Criterion LaserDisc: By all accounts (and I owned this too, so I can vouch for it), this is the color timing that matched the original look of Halloween on film. LAST RELEASE to feature the "un-filtered original mono".

1999 THX dvd: Revisionist color; no other release of Halloween has ever looked like the '99 THX dvd. They did a lot of digital manipulation to elements within the frame to make the green leaves look "fall" colored, etc.; all stuff that was never part of Halloween's photo-chemical look. Features original-but-filtered mono.

DIVIMAX dvd and 2007 Blu-ray: very saturated and "yellow" transfer, lacking a lot of the blue in night scenes. These two releases are virtually identical, if not entirely. This is what the new SF set calls, amusingly, "original color timing" on the 3rd Blu-ray.... which really only means it was the "first color timing available on Blu-ray". Features original-but-filtered mono.

35th Anniversary Blu-ray, Boxed Set Blu-ray, Lionsgate 4K: these are all virtually identical in color, and present a new and desaturated vision of the film, restoring the nighttime blue while presenting a pleasing grain texture and fine detail never seen before. The 35th Anniversary and Lionsgate discs mistakenly included a fold-down mono track taken from the 5.1 surround remix, instead of the advertised "original mono", whereas the boxed set version of the 35th Anniversary transfer did feature the original-but-filtered mono.

Scream Factory 4K UHD: first release to go back to the OCN; brand new color timing which adds saturation back to the daytime scenes while maintaining the blue of the nighttime scenes. By all accounts, this most closely matches original prints and the Criterion LaserDisc of the 90's. Features original-but-filtered mono.

It must be the color improvement because if it is about resolution, I dont see how anyone could not notice compression issues at distances which actually resolve detail greater than HD.

Even Severin could do a better job here.

Ordered 2 and 3 early August and today they updated to "not yet shipped" (so no delivery estimate).

Ordered 1 just last week and it arrived today.

This goes to show it's not First-In, First-Out with them.

Despite everything, in my book they are not the absolute worst. Canada isn't very well served, unfortunately.

QUESTION:

The ad page on SHOUT'S web page says the contents on disk 3 are:

Original Blu-ray Color Timing Presentation
Vintage Interview With Producer Moustapha Akkad
“Halloween: A Cut Above The Rest” Featurette
Halloween – The Extended Cut In HD (TV Inserts Are In Standard Definition)
NEW The Broadcast Television Cut (In Standard Definition, 1.33:1)
Horror’s Hallowed Grounds – A Look At The Original Filming Locations
Horror’s Hallowed Grounds Bus Tour From The Halloween Convention

I highlighted the NEW Broadcast Television Cut in Standard definition).

THIS is the feature that made me triple dip for this title, as I have always wanted a quality copy of the broadcast edited version which is a rare version for collectors. I'm still waiting on my copy to arrive.

However, as I see unboxing videos for this, I see this feature is NOT listed on the back box. It's the ONLY feature NOT LISTED.

Can someone PLEASE tell me if the BROADCAST TELEVSION CUT is on disk 3 or not???

I know the EXTENDED television cut is, which is the entire unedited film, WITH TV scenes included....

But as the ad says, BOTH cuts are on disk 3.

Check it out for yourself here: https://www.shoutfactory.com/product...iAFI_z50xKPYoE

It's there, I've watched it myself this weekend. It simply isn't listed on the box as a few other features aren't either (HHG episodes, trailers from hell segment). Scream simply make the covers up before finalizing the list of extras.
