Finally got to watch a big chuck of this.

I listened to the Atmos and it wasn't bad, although maybe a bit bombastic during the rainstorm. But overall fun and has some nice bass.

The movie as a whole... a massive improvement in colors, shadow detail, and detail. And when I say colors, I don't mean just a boost to colors, but to the overall tonal range. Colors in trees are more nuanced with various shades never seen. Colors in shadows coming out like never before.

I did not notice any macroblocking or compression issues in Dolby Vision. Nothing even close to like the Fog where even in Dolby Vision the issues were still at times very notable. I even went back to a few scenes to try find some issues and I couldn't.

Some minor issues though. 1st, the morning scene with Laurie and Tommy seems like it didn't have as much of a boost to color as most every other scene. 2nd the picture seemed to run a bit hot in the upper spectrum. Maybe a tiny bit of white crush during some daytime shots? I'll have to go back and look.
3rd I wish to see an original Mono rip from the Criterion LD added some day.

Overall still a huge jump from the previous. It was very noticeable the second the movie starts and the pumpkin lights turn on. I've seen this movie over 100 times and its one of my favorite. Its nice to finally watch a more respectable transfer.

Over on the Halloween II thread, people are reporting that Shout isn't replacing their scratched discs unless it's bought from them directly. This is something new with them. The fact that you literally were missing a disc and Shout still won't take care of you means I'll never buy a Shout disc from anywhere other than Amazon again, due to easy replacements. This is their product that they made, and they won't stand behind them.

Try calling Amazon directly and explaining it to them again. Sometimes a different rep could be more helpful. The reason they aren't offering an exchange though is because they're not currently in stock, so their system won't allow them to set up an exchange. It doesn't matter if more are coming later - their system only looks to see if it's available now, and if it isn't, it denies the option for a replacement. Wait a couple weeks until they're back in stock (you have 30 days), and try again, and I bet they'll set up an exchange for you then, as long as copies are in-stock.

So I finally opened my copy. I had two loose discs but was relieved to see they did not seem to be scratched. Then looked at the third disc that did not come loose and saw several big scratches on that disc. Going to have to go through that disc tomorrow to see if it plays or if I am going to have to mess with a return.

I was told Shout has excellent customer service.

They normally do. Many complaints on the Halloween II thread.

It seems like Shout is giving everyone with scratched discs or a defective set, the middle finger. (unless you purchased from them directly)

My old 4k DV has no flicker

But this one is almost like a strob light.

Raiders of the lost ark had a bit of this in DV. That’s when I turned sharpness all the way off… not that I had it high to begin with.

I wonder if I got a faulty disc. It’s really that bad.
I wonder if you're talking about the DV flicker? Do you have a Panasonic player? Does it have the latest update from almost a week ago?

Seems to me that this would be something people should take up to the vendor, be it Best Buy, Amazon or whoever.....That's what I have always done whenever i get a bad disc for whatever reason. Sorry but IMO, Shout is correct on this one.

Hooo boy, the USPS wasn't lying when they said effective Oct 1 there'd be a significant slowdown of non-letter material. Mine has been sitting in Philly distribution center going on 3 days.

I know a slowdown is supposed to happen, however I have multiple packages a week ship from DiabolikDVD and many will say arrived at Philly and won’t get another scan (sometimes not even a departure scan) until it reaches the next facility or destination city.

For mediamail the tracking can be even worse… sometimes not one single scan shows up until it hits your destination facility.

So there is hope. Fingers crossed!

That's where mine is coming from (Diabolik rules!) so I hope you're right.

My Diabolik package left Philly last night and should be here tomorrow.

I wonder if Diabolik would consider adding an option for faster shipping. Certain titles I'm okay waiting for (ones without digital copies), but others I want on release day at the latest. Those digital codes are valuable and lose about $1 per day in value.

If you want it to look more like a drab Fall day, don't be surprised if you prefer the LG for example.

Still, the Scream looks very nice, the original mono is nice, and I think the grain management is fine. The "effects" shots definitely look less noisy but not in a bad way like Jurassic Park, or at least there's so few it's hard to notice anyway. I know when I put the LG in the noise around "Haddonfield, 1978" or whatever looked awful.

Anyway no release of this movie will satisfy everyone but if you want the LG disc with more color and the original mono track here ya go, have at it.
That's why I prefer the look of the LG with it resembling the season that matches the overall theme.

All you have to do is look at how bright the new version is which in no way reflects the intended atmosphere.

This.
Saw the movie in its original theatrical run.
Bright doesn’t always mean right.
