My recommendation would be to get the new 25th anniversary 4K, as it comes with a UHD disc and the remastered Blu-ray disc.
If (for some reason) you don't like either of those, you can always find copies of the older Sapphire BD for dirt cheap. |

There's enough right with the 4k disc (they're both the same) and the Dolby Atmos track is a pretty good upgrade from the older mostly 3.1 sounding 5.1 track. |

If I had it over again knowing all the debate, and didn't purchase because of it, I'd be worse off. You sometimes need to judge for yourself. If you are satisfied with JP on 4K that is a good barometer.
Only some shots because of the filming/intent come off really striking and a cut above that film. HDR has it's moments. It's an inconsistent but pleasing overall 4K UHD disc. |

I did. I mean, I sold the UHD disc for what I paid for it and kept the old 1080p disc, intending to get the new US edition and make a 4-disc set out of it. I'd have been spending £18-ish on it either way, I just wouldn't have had to bother with selling the UHD at all if I'd waited to see if there'd be any UK release of the new 1080p disc. But it's Paramount and I thought they'd kinda forgotten about Blu-ray over here!

Just got the new 4K. Now this probably just sounds like it's coming from someone with no HDR experience, but I've played and loved other Dolby Vision movies (the Mission: Impossible movies, 2001) but this one is just kinda overwhelmingly dark. I'm curious, does Amazon accept returns on opened movies?

For whatever it's worth, I watched the movie in full today and having not seen it in some 20+ years I have to say it does look quite beautiful. I enjoyed watching this so much more than I expected to.
If there is too much DNR or not, it didn't bother me at all. It certainly isn't a disaster like Batman Begins. Even Gladiator has far more annoying DNR than this one. In any case I'm glad I got this release. |

Also had the chance to rewatch this and I have no problems overall with this presentation and I agree, other releases have far more problems. I'm glad I picked this up and it remains one of the films I can watch pretty much any time, its just such a wonderful film.

Found last year's UHD disc for cheap secondhand. It's a shame that this is such an uneven presentation. Some scenes look great (the nightclub sequence, certain shots of Forrest running back to get troops, and Forrest and Lt. Dan on the floor in the barracks at night) but it's a big turnoff when it changes mid-scene especially if there's an effects shot.

Well, for $14.99, I think I might bite the bullet. I've been holding out based on reviews, but now that the price has dropped, I may pick this up. Just bought four other movies with the current price drop sales so if I don't have an others with greater priority, I may just get it (and get the updated blu as a bonus).
