There's one guy on here (mikey_horror?) who literally has like maybe 100 copies of the movie across various formats.

Tbh I'm just impressed lol.

That being said, I've probably purchased Halloween more than 7 times across VHS, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K.

Halloween is one of those films where people have bought different releases of it over the years. (usually because there is no release that is 100% perfect)

Halloween didn't look perfect when it was shown in theaters 43 years ago because it's a low budget movie. It only cost $300.000 to make, and was filmed in less than a month. Nothing is perfect because we don't live in a perfect world.

Thoughts on the 2 new logos before the movie starts? I'm fine with them

Here’s one man’s opinion.

I'm LOVIN' what I'm seeing. Keep in mind, I'm the guy who still watches his 4K discs down-converted via Oppo 203 to my 1080p SDR projector.

1. That very first reviewer stated a problem playing this with his Oppo 203, but I had no such issue. It recognized the disc and played fine. My Oppo is undefeated, knock on wood.

2. The two new opening logos suuuuuck, and are very loud. I've definitely made a note to cue this movie to the 35s mark whenever I watch it.

[Show spoiler]3. The color timing of Laurie's walk to school (right at the beginning, when she crosses the street to join Tommy) still looks desaturated to my eyes, but I'm really diggin' literally everything else. The "walk of the three girls after school" is much better, in my opinion.

4. The detail and grain are glorious. Absolutely a first-rate transfer from original neg.

5. Not that many of you will care, but the only shot (in my skipping around) that suffers from the HDR-to-SDR conversion is the wide shot of the open fields by the train track, which dollies over to discover Loomis in the phone booth. Looks very washed out and overly bright on my SDR setup, like some of the beach scenes in Jaws. But again, I have to take those lumps 'til I get a proper HDR setup.

6. Did I mention those two opening logos suuuuuuuck! You're in the mood for the classic music to start and YIKES THOSE LOGOS ARE SO FRIGGIN' LOUD. Again... cue to 35s to eliminate them.

[Show spoiler]7. Mono sounds the same to my ears as previously, and at the same volume I dialed in when watching the Blu-ray from the boxed set... but that's not an insult or a disappointment coming from me, 'cuz I've always been 100% content with that mono track.

This is a home run, in my book: the definitive edition, for me, of an all-time fave. Can't wait to start having vaccinated friends over for some seasonal viewings!

Came across this pic on Twitter of the Shout! bundle packaging. Very reminiscent of the Friday the 13th packaging, although perhaps not quite as "custom."

I'm not the same poster but I also saw it originally at the theatre when it came out. It was my first date and the girl clawed my hand throughout the entire film and for each scary jump scene, her fingernails drove deeper into the top of my hand.

Besides that, I've never seen a movie so scary and intense at that point in my life.

So what is the consensus here (assuming there is one, who am I kidding?). Lionsgate or Shout? To my eyes the Shout seems a nice clean image and good in motion but feels like too much noise reduction has been applied. I'm not sure what film stock would've been used at the time but as it was shot on anamorphic I'm assuming it would've probably been a fairly non-grainy stock anyway?

Apparently Carpenter insisted that as much money as was feasible, more than half the film's entire budget, was spent on the best equipment, stock and labs available to them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fun fact: The triumphant return of Michael Myers in Halloween's 4, 5 and 6 only earned as much money combined as Halloween II (where Michael was killed for good) and the "disastrous" Halloween III: Season Of The Witch combined.

4, 5 and 6 each played in more theatres but on average pulled in a box office amount that's virtually the same as HIII's "catastrophic" domestic gross.
