Oh man, I absolutely loooooved that format. We got all kinds of special editions of movies, remasterings, supplemental material, running commentaries, and even a little thing called "widescreen" way, way before the general public even heard of those things. The picture quality was far better than VHS, and the sound quality? A laserdisc with DTS audio (or Dolby Digital) will still walk all over even 4K lossless audio codecs. If you've never heard Jurassic Park on the DTS laserdisc, well, you haven't heard it since you saw it in the theater.

I missed the boat on LaserDisc, just a touch too old for me, HD-DVD was definitely my LaserDisc in a way.

Those James Cameron LDs had to be epic back in the day.

I do still remember when Blockbuster Video was liquidating their LD stock mid-2000s they had many movies for $5-$20

If I remember correctly, the Special Edition laserdisc of The Abyss was the first home video format to be mastered with THX certification. It was released both pan and scan and widescreen. Cameron actually said he preferred the pan and scan version for home viewing. Like Terminator 2, the film was shot on Super 35, which actually meant you were losing picture information with BOTH aspect ratios.

Anyway, I really don't mean to hijack this thread. So, everybody.......do you think Michael has an innie or outie belly button?

I can confirm that they do fit in the SCF3 cases.

The SCF3 cases are slightly larger than standard steelbook sleeves, intended to fit Nova steelbooks with slipcovers. They fit, I promise you. I'll take a picture later.

That UK shipping kills it for me atm, I need to try those, though.

Regarding the included mono track included on the new 2021 UHD of HALLOWEEN:

Please, for the love of all that is holy, tell me that is not the same, awful, filtered track included on previous releases. The original mono of the 1994 LD release was loud, distinct, and perfect.

How is the quality of this mono track? My purchase of the entire set rests on whether it has been correctly included in its original, non-filtered version this time around.

It's basically the same track that was exclusive to the 15-disc set. It's the best we've got, unless you mux in the 1.0 Criterion mono.

It's the same track as before, but it may have been fiddled with just enough that it sounds better than the last Blu Ray, or at least that is the early opinion of people that have heard it. Personally, I think the Atmos sounds great. The original mono is certainly better than the mono on Day of the Dead (Anchor Bay), which is only Dolby Digital, but is my go-to track.

I'd say it's definitely better sounding than a novice ripping the track off an LD, which isn't as easy as everyone thinks it is.

With all due respect, it's not. The LD still blows away the mono on the 4K. I've muxed the Criterion LD mono onto the new BD and it's spot on.

If they hadn't included the additional sound effects in the Atmos, I might like it more, because it technically is an impressive track, but not for a 1978 film.

Clearly you're not a novice, though, I've tried to rip vinyl before and it sounds like garbage when I do it, I definitely couldn't do a LaserDisc! I would love to hear the untouched track someday regardless.
