The entire scream factory Halloween set is 'actual' 24p rather than 23.976p

There certainly have been 'actual' 24p movies released before ; mainly European films but the Halloween films where all released on Blu Ray previously as 23.976p which makes the change unusual.

That's really interesting. The only other 24p Blu-Ray I've actually seen is Kung Fury, and that's obviously far from a commercial release.

If US-based peoples own the Lionsgate UHDs of Total Recall, Rambo trilogy, Universal Soldier, Red Heat, Lock Up and several more I can't recall off the top of my head then they've already got some 'actual' 24p content on UHD.

I think we're starting to see the industry shift from 23.98 to 24, the case for which is made by some folks here: https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.ph...&id=1629438832

I mostly agree with John Hess' thoughts on that matter.

I don't know if there's already a community animosity towards this guy, so hopefully this doesn't create another flame war.

Fractional Frame Rates are FINE... plus your chat! - YouTube

Literally never heard of him. I've got no skin in the frame game either way, but if it means having to create less deliverables then I don't see how that's a bad thing for the content creators, and if it has no impact on the end user then what will they care? The last remnants of the old NTSC republic have been swept away.

I don't think there's anything wrong with moving forward without fractional frame rates*, but the one thing I found strange about the 24p group is that they insist displays no longer support fractional framerates, and instead have some sort of conversion take place in the playback device. That just sounds like a great way to needlessly destroy backwards compatibility.

*As in, distributing new content in integer rates.

What speaker mode are people using for the mono track playback? Just your two fronts? The Atmos sounds great, it's almost earth shattering in 7.1 (storm scene especially), but the mono sounds more tame coming from just the fronts, but I kind of like that. Not sure how I feel about the mono surround modes.

Cool

Well, I finally got my eyes on this thing. Very nice. Very pleasing-looking picture. It's a very filmic presentation with nice, fine grain, and I'm not a grain purist, believe me. Didn't someone say this version is color over-saturated? Maybe that was one of the sequels. Anyway, I definitely did not find that to be the case here. If the Lionsgate disc is even more desaturated, I'll definitely be selling that one. When the evening shots start, then the colors appear more saturated, but still not overdone. I think the picture overall was very well balanced with a level of clarity we haven't seen before. It's basically what you would expect from the o-neg.

The only real complaints I have are a handful of shots are too dark, and they could have been a tad more aggressive with the HDR. Just slightly more pop would have been nice. The only real pop I remember came from the opening credits, and then later during evening shots, characters that wore red tops have a good level of pop. I would have liked more, especially from light sources but they were obviously going for a more natural, filmic presentation and I think they achieved that.

That mono track was very nice. My amp is in the shop so for the time being I'm listening to things with headphones or earbuds. I normally wouldn't choose the mono, but since I'm listening in non-surround anyway I thought, why not? I think the those that usually choose the original audio will be happy.

Highly recommended.

Now, I have to wait 'til Thursday for 3 & 4 to arrive.

How come Loomis is such a dick to everyone in this movie and Halloween II?

It sounds much better in headphones, I did some lite A&B comparisons. On the speakers the mono just wasn't good enough, it's anemic and thin, the dialogue was like trying to find a key at the beach at times. I had it pumped 10-15dbs past the Atmos and it still wasn't loud enough, a shame.

That's still Walter White Loomis compared to the Heisenberg we get in Halloween 5.

Is the Lionsgate still a nice alternative to the superior Shout Factory or is it totally useless now?

It has better compression, but the Shout is superior in every other way.

He doesn't have anything to gain by being nice to anyone. He knows what Michael is, he can't stop him alone, and when anyone questions him it p*sses him off. He's terrified. I'd probably be a d*ck, too.

Well, maybe he regretted his behavior and thought I'm gonna be nice to the crazy preacher in H4.

Perfect is what perfect is. A perfect representation of a 43 year old movie would be creating what it looked like 43 years ago regardless if it looked good or bad. In fact this latest release actually looks better than what we originally saw in the theatre because the film print was at least 3rd generation while the Ultra HD Blu-ray is pretty much a replica of the original camera negative.

Low budget has nothing to do with it. It was shot on film with good lenses. Lighting has a lot to do with it too. Film, as long as it's exposed properly yields great fidelity hard to recreate digitally...unless it's with the most recent highest end digital equipment available today.

4K scans of budget movies recorded on 35mm film yields better fidelity (in terms of contrast resolution and more) than Marvel movies of today that have been duped from a 2K Digital Intermediate (even though the actual capture was from much higher quality and even parts of it shot on film.)
