This article says he did full body motion capture for the role. I would suggest not judging special effects from footage shot on a phone.

Just his face...

"I’m sorry I’m not in costume. I didn’t even have a costume when I was doing it. It’s all done in motion capture. So… they stick a helmet on your head, they put two cameras around, and they capture all your expressions, facial expressions. So basically, they’re going to concoct some kind of construction and they will use my facial expressions – eyes, mouth, voice – they’ll turn into this murderous, avenging Steppenwolf from the planet Apokolips, apparently. Who’s bent on Hell on Earth."

I would suggest reading the whole article and not judging from a headline; he specifically says they're only using his face for motion capture.

That CGI is awful. It looks like animation not like something real and looks even more horrible any time you can see a human in the shot.

I give it a grade of D.

I thought Wonder Woman was decent but this just looks too much like an Avengers rip off and boring CGI-fest. These super-hero movies are getting so over saturated it's not even funny.

Aside from being an ensemble superhero movie, it doesn't seem to be anything like The Avengers.

You mean other than a billionaire superhero bringing a team of people more powerful than him together to fight a lackey who wants to use an ancient power source to open a gateway for his boss to destroy the earth?

The similarities are due to the source material and not the films themselves. The tone, cinematography, visual style of the characters and the world, etc, all look different from The Avengers.

He says he's not in costume, but that doesn't mean he isn't wearing some sort of motion capture suit on set. He could be referring to not wearing a big suit of armor, the gray pajamas aren't exactly a costume.

It makes no sense that they wouldn't do any motion capture on the body since that's what Snyder has done on BvS, Man of Steel, Sucker Punch, etc.

Even if Hinds didn't do body capture for Steppenwolf, they could've gotten a younger more atheistic actor to motion capture for body movement. Doomsday in BvS was mo-cap by multiple actors.

Darkseid has sent his uncle Steppenwolf to put a stop to the Christian imagery and references in Snyder's films once and for all.

The tone seems just like a Marvel rip-off

Well, early screening goers have given the movie high marks so I'm excited.
