I could be up for this, but the BD already looks quite good.

What? No. You'd still be having what are basically transfers from 2003 (for the early 2K DIs on the sequels) versus a brand-new film transfer from 2018, there would be a gap in quality regardless of the K's and it makes zero sense to hobble the first one if you're going to the trouble and effort of doing a new scan in the first place. It certainly didn't bother Warners on Harry Potter, as someone said.

Exactly what I was thinking. HDR is able to keep accents of colour and light without them suffocating the image like they do in SDR, and something that I hated about the new green grade on Matrix 1 wasn't the green itself but the skin tones, they looked awfully yellowy at times (even people's lips, ugh). HDR grade has got a good shot at evening out the image so I can't wait to see it.

I watched the BD several weeks ago and to me it just looks like your typical early format, VC-1 encode. Very mediocre by today's BD standards.

Aside from a screw-up (hey, always possible from a studio), this will be a BIG upgrade in every way.

If the Wachowskis are involved then I imagine it'll look like however they want it to. If not then I'd assume Warner would go with the original colors which haven't been seen since the film was in theaters.

Another release that will benefit from an audio upgrade. The BD was average at best in both audio and video.

True. Audio was pretty bad with hardly any ULF. Video was okay. Overall the entire Matrix Trilogy requires a proper 4K remastering.

I'm hungry already thinking about the HDR steak in the "ignorance is bliss" scene.

I think it will be overkill, If they will make digital code glow like Harry vs. Voldy battle.

What I think should be bright - electric engines on the ship, Cypher's gun, laser rays and stuff like that.

I don't think they will, the code isn't meant to fry your eyeballs. But place your bets now for the scenes in the white 'loading room' (or whatever it was called) being presented brighter than bright!!

I'm pretty sure the code was like a supernova in the third movie though. Continuity already dictated the first movie awash in green, so it's not crazy.

Also I had my eyes dilated today and stayed home watching The Matrix and the sudden code shot in the hallway at the end was certainly blinding.

THAT bit might be played up for effect, sure. But not the general walls of code that we see, that'd be overkill. I really hope the other movies are coming though, I gots to see that amazing freeway chase in Reloaded in HDR.

I even think the sequels weren't as blunt green as they appear on the blu. Especially stuff like the freeway chase.

I didn't say it would be good to do that, it just seemed like something that could happen, and I didn't know they'd already set a precedent for not caring if one movie looks way better than the rest in a UHD collection, and not gimping one for the sake of the others.

It's not like we don't also have precedent for lazy releases on UHD, so why do you think Matrix is a 100% sure thing that they'll do "a brand-new film transfer from 2018" and "new scan" for?

I wasn't advocating for that. I was saying they could end up doing that. "it might rain" =/= "I hope it rains" or "it's going to rain"

Still seems like an asinine thing to do in this day and age. They're literally remastering it for 4K so if they have do a new transfer - and they do, even the greeny retimed one dates from 2004 - then why on Earth wouldn't they do it in 4K?

Besides, they already did this exact thing for Harry Potter 1 and 2, so again with those pesky precedents. We get a lot of rain down here.
