I doubt Paramount's going to upconvert an older master. Gump was finished on film so making a 4K scan isn't going to be difficult.

"Paramount has remastered the movies in 4K resolution, HDR10"

HDR10?

I thought Paramount made their decision in favor of Dolby Vision?

They don't trumpet Dolby Vision as a feature very often. However, they have made some commitments to using DV on disc.

Amazing! Too bad we probably won't get American Beauty in 4K.

I'm still looking for my first 4k tv.

There are no tvs which support both HDR10/HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, correct?

I asked Panasonic about their OLED tvs this week. They told me that because of hardware limitations Dolby Vision couldn't even be offered as a firmware update for their current tvs.

Forrest Gump was released in native 4K already, back in 2014. It came in the "Samsung UHD video pack bundle", and it's a native 4K transfer. That version was without HDR though, just simple 4k goodness. Judging from the comments I've heard about how the picture quality is, this UHD will be a thing of beauty. I've seen some screenshots of the transfer too, but my screen is 1080p.

Well, if they can release Mel Gibson movies... American Beauty is a classic, maybe they'll wait 5-7 years and release it when people have forgotten and moved on.

All the 2018 model Dolby Vision tvs also support HDR10, but none of them support HDR10+. Dolby Vision is the premium feature that everyone should want, while HDR10+ is for people who have a Samsung or Panasonic and can't get Dolby Vision. It's not as good, and so far specific discs are yet to be announced.

Here are some pics of the UHD transfer of Forrest Gump, from the Samsung USB bundle from back in 2014.

[Show spoiler]

Would Sony be able to offer an HDR10+ update for their current TVs just in case HDR10+ is going to be the winner ?

As I mentioned...a Dolby Vision firmware update would not be possible for Panasonic TVs because of the hardware. So I'm wondering about the Sony hardware.

It sucks that they make it that difficult for customers.

It's technically achievable on certain Sony tvs, via a firmware update, to add HDR10+, but Sony has gone on record saying they aren't interested in it. Its a lot of work getting this HDR stuff working over HDMI 2.0. It'll be so simple in HDMI 2.1 tvs, and maybe by then there will be a few discs out that could make Sony reconsider. I'd say the chances of Sony adding HDR10+ to 2018 tvs are slim to none. They probably won't add it next year, as they are shunning it.

So what do you think? Is Dolby Vision going to be the winner when it comes to physical media?

What TV would you recommend to purchase right now ?

Haven't seen an Australian listing yet, only a matter of time though. Definitely interested in seeing how the visual effects stand up in 4K, hoping the seams are noticeable to the point of distraction.

They are jpeg images, they don't represent what the UHD download actually looks like in motion, but I never owned that Samsung pack. Obviously, this disc is going to be a huge upgrade, but jpeg images are very compressed.

They're trying to erase Kevin Spacey from Hollywood. A bit of over-compensation. However, there are any number of scummy or questionable actors/actresses over the years who still have their movies available.

They left the joke in Blockers about American Beauty so they aren't trying to completly erase him. More like trying to find the right time to release it without curtailing criticism of either "riding the controversy" or "supporting him."

Saw this one in the theater as a kid and remember it still having sold out shows for months afterwards like with Titanic. Hugely popular film at the time. Watched it quite a bit on vhs growing up but don't think I got around to watching the blu.

We'll get American Beauty 4K eventually, maybe even next year for the 20th anniversary when there's some more distance from SpaceyGate. He's been in too many movies that'll sell well. Usual Suspects? Superman Returns? LA Confidential? Se7en? [EDIT: and A Bug's Life, aka the unfairly forgotten gem of Pixar from way back when they made good movies] Of course they're all coming to 4K at some point.

I have myself a giggle every time Hollywood pretends to take a stand against something.
