is it worth getting the new BD Geoff. I ask since the reviewer feels that in 1080p SDR, Forrest Gump is more consistent than the 4K as the DNR is not as jarring supposedly, or should I go get the '09 disc.

The 4K disc beats all of them

He CERTAINLY likes to use CAPITAL LETTERS a lot to GET his POINT across. Unsurprisingly, I think he's talking BOLLOCKS for much of that review.

[edit]

It's too funny that he didn't peg the DNR in Batman Begins at all, blaming it entirely on the "stylised" source, but destroys Gump for the DNR. Heh. Sorry Poya, he's just another one for the fire.

Going to echo what many have said on this one and just my overall massive disappointment...

Definitely some blanket DNR mildly affecting the whole film and often heavily so. So inconsistent and frustrating. I love the look of film and the kind of velvety grain found in many Sony and Fox titles....and this rarely looks like film....However, the bus stop scenes early on, some interiors at the Gump house, the exterior shots whilst young Forrest waits for the bus to meet Je-nny...and when Forrest is running away from the bullies look quite good.....but Leon this is not!

That being said....like Geoff D suggested it is possible to still watch and enjoy the movie especially as there is some nice depth here and there and some rich colours on occasion but it just feels like a missed opportunity. No T2 level travesty but this could have been special...

I believe the DNR is worst in some wide shots especially those with effects involved...but even then the wide shots of the desert during the run across America without effects lack the fine detail I'd hoped for....the small rocks and scrub seemed smeary and indistinct. Also the mountains in the distance on that shot lack any detail to the rear of the frame.

The sound was great with dialogue being easy to discern and sufficient soundspace when required such as the Vietnam section. The brilliant period music also sounds superb and I think elevates this film to something more.....I have a real soft spot for it....sure its manipulative and sentimental at times but it draws me in every time!

It's had a bit off the top for the whole movie for sure, and they dial it up further for all the CG shots which is what makes them look even more anodyne, but even so this never goes full Melting Butler™ and it's still got a sense of texture and detail that's way, way beyond anything seen in Grease or Batman Begins or T2 at their best.

The new BD layers some sharpening on top of all that which is why I think some folks are responding to it more positively, thinking that it's sharper than the UHD (it isn't) and while it makes what's left of the grain seem to stand out more it also looks slightly more processed and goopy with it, whereas the UHD stays just the right side of that line.

Yeah I have the earlier 4k release sans the new blu ray....but I can't see it looking better than the 4k tbh.

I think Gump is another Jurassic Park in some ways where the desire to make the whole movie more homogenous in appearance and subdue the early CGI stuff, has led to some unfortunate loss of high frequency detail via filtering and or DNR.

At least Gump's CG has got a few years on JP's so it's still got a fair bit of quality baked in even when the DNR is slathered on, and it doesn't help that in JP's case they decided to sharpen the most heavily DNR'ed scenes so they look double fugly now (though the dynamic range on both movies' VFX tends to burn out pretty harshly, it would be a few more years before they really started to bake in dynamic range akin to what film negative would resolve).

Gotta say your knowledge really is first rate Geoff, seriously.

Your reviews really do capture the flavour of releases and with just enough technical 'seasoning' to make the whole thing taste better.

Going by your glowing report of Don't Look Now (David M strikes again!), I really hope that Apocalypse Now doesn't suffer the same shortfalls of Deerhunter's HDR10 layer (between that disc and some blocky pinky green chroma on Saving Private Ryan make me pine for Dolby Vision)

The Doors is more of an indicator as to how AN could turn out in HDR10, it's better than their previous encodes but still not great, it's rather fragile at times. Or it could turn out that Lionsgate are handling the encoding so it might yet be okay.

Gump on UHD is the most mixed bag disc I have seen on the format. As others have pointed out some scenes look fantastic, but then there are some particularly in the Vietnam segment that look borderline awful.

4K! What's your sole purpose in this world?

To look like film, drill sergeant!

God damn it, 4K! You're a god damn genius! This is the most outstanding answer I have ever heard. You must have a goddamn I.Q. of 160. You are goddamn gifted, 4K.

FYI, regarding Apocalypse Now, the guy responsible at Lionsgate told me (after I brought up my disappointment in SC's HDR10 encoding):

Quote:
Lionsgate is authoring the discs on behalf of Studio Canal …..the US/UK share a disc and then Germany will have its own set that simply adds the German Audio. Rest assured – the image will be fine.

I thought JP looked kind of ok (with all its flaws), and to my mind, FG looks worse.

So I embarrassingly bought the 25th Anniversary 4K not remembering I already owned the first 4K release

Should I keep the 25th Anniversary 4K or is the first 4K package just as good?

In the UK 4K set, which version of the BD is included, the old or the remaster? And is it the 2 disc version for the BD?
I'm assuming that there's only been the one 4K disc worldwide so far.

The UK release consists of the UHD, the older 1080p blu-ray (not the remaster) + the blu-ray extras disc, so it's a three disc set. And yes, same UHD presentation worldwide.
