I've decided not to automatically upgrade from BD to UHD as there is only so many times I can buy the same movie. And also, to my 49-year old eyes, BD for the most part looks amazing - especially as I started collecting in the days of pan-and-scan VHS.

However, the 4K releases of the first three films are appealing as I never upgraded from DVD, and I do enjoy them quite a bit.

Seems like 4K titles end up around $15 at Best Buy and on Amazon after a while, so I'll likely pick them up then.

WB seem to be the only studio who are actually updating the transfers for the standard BD's.

I appreciate your comment.

Not everyone has a 4K player/tv in every room.

Sometimes it is nice to have a blu-ray/dvd to watch in other rooms, on vacation ,while traveling etc etc where the ideal 4K setup is not available but you still want to watch the movie.

Wonder if the UHD TrueHD track can be remuxed and matched up with the blu-ray video.(For those that own both the UHD and blu-ray disc).

I refuse to buy Blu-ray unless I have no choice. Now DVD, on the other hand, I will still buy. There are simply too many movies not being sold on either 4k UHD or Blu-ray and only sold on DVD. When those movies eventually stop coming out on DVD and start coming out on 4K (or Blu-ray even) then I'll stop.

Don’t remind us of those days. Yikes.

I know most of you with 4K set ups probably don't care that the Blu-ray has not been remastered but it's so lazy of them to just throw in the old Blu-ray. And sales would be higher if they offered a remastered Blu-ray along with the 4K disc. North American fans have been asking for that for a decade.
Never mind remasters, Paramount are sitting on AVC encodes of the current transfers of M:I 1, 2 and 3, and STILL haven't released them in the US. That's just laziness.

There should at least be both versions made available. It was shot IMAX for a reason, and it's a shame Bird won't give people at home the version that he shot (even if it's a compromised AR, it's still a pretty nice effect when the picture suddenly goes full screen). Oh well.

I love the IMAX ratio changes, if you are in a dark room, myself I don't notice as much. Just striking how much more detailed the images look on The Dark Knight as opposed to the standard scope frame.

I'd assume the IMAX mission impossible footage from that particular film would look just as striking.

Shame there isn't even an option for it. I guess Bird's thinking is it was only for those theatre screens only and now is just dead lol

The increase in detail and resolution will still be very apparent for Ghost Protocol's IMAX-shot footage. Even on the standard blu-ray I could see a difference. The whole Burj sequence and the final battle in the car storage area were pretty detailed even in 1080p.

Still waiting to hear more thoughts on each of the releases, though!

After the review on this side I am confused. Does MI have DNR or not? The review mentions heavy grain, but BrassTax review mentioned a lot of DNR use. What's really going on?

I think around $20 is the price I'll need each of these to be before I think about getting them. Most definitely want them in the collection though!
Not that it will do you good now but Amazon.ca had them for $23 each. I jumped on that price. Check on release day because they dropped the JP set down to $49

There may be a question between soft lenses (which anamorphic is known for) and DNR. Mission: Impossible has always been pretty soft.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to try making sense of the contradicting reviews of this release.

Bird said as much when pressed on Tomorrowland not receiving the footage...which would of course have looked amazing in DV.

I know BrassTax has a lot of fans—but he’s more personality than he is technical.

Is it possible this release has DNR? Sure.

But is it also possible that he’s mistaking optical softness for DNR? Yes. That’s also very possible.

Oh, and not to mention the possibility that people may be exaggerating the use of DNR—if there is any—in the way they did for FORREST GUMP. Which actually looked really good.

I could swear I read a whitepaper 3 years ago about the proposed workflow for UHD grading and prep, and DNR was just one of the steps in there. Which if true, means DNR is always used to some degree, but just a matter of whether it gets used to a point where its detrimental.

To be honest I’ve not seen Forrest Gump in 4K, I don’t own it. I’ve read three different reviews (Av Forums, Hi def and this site plus seen BT’s review) and all of them were down on it.

It maybe a case of softness being mistaken for dnr but because I read more than one review of Forrest Gump and they were all down on it, it’s put me off buying it. Which is unfortunate as I really like it. Also there are other 4K’s I want to buy and I’d rather spend my money on better transfers as it’s getting expensive! So I’m gonna stick with my Blu-ray of FG. At the moment there are mixed reviews on Mission Impossible in 4k, this site says it’s a 4.5 out of 5.0. So I’m holding off buying it as I don’t want to shell out £69.99 on the box set from HMV if the first 2 or 3 are below parr. But surely they can’t be worse than the Blu-ray transfers. Having said that I bought the Scandinavian box set of the first three. They had a different encode and lossless sound and we’re an improvement of the U.S and U.K discs.

I think it’s gonna be a case of me holding off on buying 4ks unless they have great transfers. I replaced my dvd collection like for like on Blu-ray if/when they became available but I’m not gonna do that this time. I’ll just replace for the cream of the crop!
