I can’t watch mine in Dolby vision using a Panasonic 820. It keeps on flickering, a lot more than ghost in the shell, so I have to do the same as that disc and watch it in hdr10.

My review of the movie and the new UHD 4K.
What is there to say about this masterpiece of horror cinema? it's lightning in a bottle! who knew that a low budget independent movie would suddenly be a box office hit in late 1978 and in 1979 all of a sudden? it did started at Compass International pictures who liked John Carpenter's previous movie and hired him to do a horror movie about babysitters and a killer. Carpenter and Debra Hill thought up of a movie set around Halloween as no one has ever used the title "Halloween" before thus they thought of that, as originally Bob Clark was gonna do a movie on Halloween itself but made a horror movie set around Christmas time instead for Black Christmas. Christopher Lee was considered for the part of Loomis as was Peter Cushing, but i'm very happy they got Donald Pleasance as he was the right choice with his unique charisma and talent to bring the character to life. Jamie Lee Curtis made one hell of a debut as Laurie Strode and gave off a great performance as one of horror cinema's greatest heroines and even made her a star, i mean without this movie she would had never been a star. The other cast is great as well, the money was even well spent on the camera trickery for this movie on the P.O.V. shots and gorgeous cinematography by Dean Cundey. Nick Castle was solid inside of the Michael Myers suit as he had a presence to him, yet originally they had two choices of masks for Michael either a clown one or a painted Shatner mask but i'm glad they did the right choice and gave us the iconic shatner mask which is as iconic as the movie itself and iconic as the poster itself even the score. The score by John Carpenter gives us a mood at times as it's a mix of piano and synth that really gets you into the thrills and atmosphere of this movie. Who knew it took 20 days to film this movie in late April and May for 4 weeks, but it was worth it for that budget and filmmaking power. Even when they finished the movie and played it at USC one student after the movie was over said "this movie will never be a classic, you are out of your mind because this disgusting movie won't be a classic" as he left. That guy was wrong, it DID become a classic for years to come and an iconic movie. It became as every bit a classic like Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Jaws, The Exorcist, Alien, Dawn of the Dead, The Haunting, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and more. Studios thought the movie was too risky as they passed on it like Paramount to Warner to Columbia pictures as Compact International decided to distribute it themselves in theaters. The film got it's debut on October 25th 1978 in downtown Kansas City Missouri and New York City and due to word of mouth, it became a smash in those cities and got good press. It finally got a wide release in cities across the country and became the highest grossing independent movie of it's time before Ninja Turtles the movie and more. It made lots of money from October 1978 to April 1979. It grossed $70 million dollars and proved to Hollywood that even independents can make tons of money too which Warner to Columbia and Paramount and more studios kicked themselves for not distributing the movie as they thought it was "too risky" which they took chances and took more risks. Even Alien was a risk by Fox and hey it paid off, Dawn of the Dead was a risky independent movie with no rating as it paid off and so on. This movie has pure importance to the genre on being one of those landmarks of the time like Exorcist, Jaws, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Suspiria and more that became classics. I mean, without it, Hollywood would had never learned that even indie pictures can make money as any Hollywood movie too. And let's talk about the script? what's there to say? it's a superb screenplay by John Carpenter and Debra Hill. As there's likable characters especially Loomis and Laurie you care about and gives us suspenseful scenes as you feel bad for the likable teen characters being killed off except Laurie who becomes a survivor and fights off the boogeyman. There's good character development and characters who talk naturally as i think it's because Debra Hill knew how teens talked when she co-wrote the script. And it's a slow burn but moves at a great pace because you invest in the characters and storyline. I saw this on video at age 5 with my dad back in 86 and enjoyed it since, it's been one of my favorite horror movies of all time and still is a timeless masterpiece. What can i say also about the new UHD 4K from Shout Factory? it's a HUGE improvement over Lionsgate's blu-ray as you get fantastic new 4K restoration from the original negative as there's quality detail even on hair to clothing to the blood looking more colorful than ever. There is also a blu-ray with original time coloring included plus there is sweet new sound and original mono included. The extras abound are commentaries, trailers, TV spots, radio spots, deleted scenes, extended version, NBC broadcast television version, interviews, featurettes, still gallery, newspaper ad gallery, NBC promo, and horror's hollowed grounds. Definitely a worthy upgrade and highly recommended. My rating for the movie: Five out of five stars (i find nothing wrong with this movie). Last edited by DenOfEarth; 10-22-2021 at 04:05 AM. |

I watched this a few days ago, no issues on my LG Oled and LG 4k player.
The movie has never looked better, rich color pallet and deep blacks. Like others have said, natural and organic look without the blown out whites. Very pleased with Halloween 🎃 1-3 in 4k, purchased mine from Amazon and lucky there were no scratches, I would be irate as well. Plan to watch 4-5 tomorrow! |

Yeah this is pretty frustrating. I'm currently waiting on my arrival of the Second Sight release of The Guest and am worried that the discs might be damaged as there's already been reports of people getting damaged discs. I don't know how replacements will work with Second Sight regarding U.S. customers either if that ends up being the case.

Are people with scratched discs playing them to see if they work? I’ve been buying new and used shiny discs since 1987 and I’ve never had a CD, LD, DVD, BRD, or UHD affected, save for one I’d dropped and scratched on the corner of a stereo component.

Some thoughts on H1…
Compression flaws aren’t as noticeable as I expected. It is better than The Fog, and that scene with the nurse getting out of the car in the rain is so dark and fast, the macroblocking is barely evident. I think blocking in the blue sky in day shots looks worse. Enough with this, threw in the BD. Unlike H2 and its 4K/BD, I dont think the H1 BD here is a good alternate option to get around compression of the 4K. The compression isn’t good here either. Better than the 4K, but it does not outweigh the resolution loss and is really noticeable compared to the 4K. |
