So how is that Dolby Digital Mono track on the 2007 disc? Is it comparable to the LD mix or is it the same thing the Shout discs got just not lossless (filtered or whatever).

Honestly though, I tried watching the new 4K with the OG mono track but just wasn't a fan. Even after cranking up the volume several notches it still sounded quite filtered and flat. For better or worse, it's never going to be my preferred track of choice when watching the film. |

Frankly, the mono is all I've ever listened to; like, literally ever. I tried the remix for about twenty seconds of the opening credits once, back when the Lionsgate UHD came out... but it just didn't sound like "Halloween" to me, so I stopped watching and switched back over to the boxed set's 35th Anniversary disc. Never had a problem with the mono sounding filtered or muffled or whatever. I used to own the LaserDisc -- it was a Day One purchase for me back in the 90's -- but back then I only used TV speakers, so I never even noticed a changeover to this era of "filtered" mono. If it weren't for these forums making me realize how dissatisfied I should feel (lol), I would still be blissfully ignorant and probably NEVER notice a problem with it. Do I wish it was the better mono from the LD, now that I know better? Sure; what's better is better, no argument there. But am I content with what we've been given on every single disc since the 90's: including the 2007 Blu, the boxed set's 35th Anniversary Blu, and the new UHD? Absolutely content; sounds like "Halloween" to me. |

If I compare the mono mix on this to the mono mix in Phantasm or Repo Man, it's night and day to me on my system in my house, so something was futzed with at some point and we've been stuck with it. My ears are fine and my speakers are fine. I'd also offer the argument that the Criterion audio doesn't lie, I have it and it's just the way it should sound imo. |
