In 4:3 pan-and-scan from an old 1" broadcast analog tape master. The debuted remastered in widescreen from the 35mm film elements on the 1999 THX Anchor Bay DVD.

I did a comparison between the Shout Factory Halloween 4K and the Blu-Ray discs. The 4K looks a bit darker and the colors are less vibrant(saturated) than the Blu-Ray disc. The blue lighting in the night scenes looks much more vibrant and even a bit more blue on the Blu-Ray disc.

Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be HDR and/or Dolby Vision that lowers the brightness and color saturation. Is this done to make everything more realistic looking?

I've only seen the BD but compared to the 35th anniversary BD, the colors are much more vivid. Especially the blue hues. I love how the new disc looks. The pumpkin and the opening credits really glow now.

Maybe there are houses like that in Illinois, but can you imagine having to bundle up and walk on an icy path with a basket of clothes if you want to do laundry in the winter?

I'm with you; I didn't notice any issues with this movie until many years after my first viewing. It's my favorite movie by a mile - which means I've watched it a lot and noticed a few issues. It doesn't change my opinion of it, though.
I'm in the NorthEast and half the trees and shrubs are still green. Not every tree turns a bright vivid color. There's some color bursting from some trees, and some are just various browns, and some never turned, and are still various shades of green. Now and then we get a fall with the timing just right so more of the trees turn, and they make for spectacular pictures, but often, it's a mix of one tree is orange, one is red, one is brown, one is yellow, then a bunch are green, etc.

On a bad fall when the foliage hits late, much of the trees never turn. It depends on timing. There are charts online you can follow to track which week is the best for colors in a given area. Go too early and it's still mostly green. Go too late and it's mostly brown (or still mostly green for those trees that haven't changed). Get it just right, and you'll see lots of colors, but again, some years just don't work out so well for color.

I think they did okay with what they had considering their limitations. It's best just not to let those nitpicks get to you.

You haven't seen the 4K disc yet?

There is a difference between the two. I kind of prefer the Blu-Ray over the 4K. The colors are more vivid and it's slightly brighter.

There's Ultra HD Blu-ray players out there that will play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and send it out as HD for HD displays. That way you can still take advantage of the newer scans and updated audio.

Yep. That's what I did before I finally bought a 4K set recently. I had to create a different picture preset to adjust for the dimness of the image when downconverting to 1080p, but aside from that it worked great and I was able to take advantage of new 4K remastered films.

That’s what my parents do. I bought them a 4k player for Christmas last year so they are half way there as they’ve still got their old HD tv.

The location used for Halloween never bothered me. The opening daytime scenes in Haddonfield 1978 (shot in Pasadena) conveyed a familiar mundanity of suburban/small town life. They're appropriately drab.

The after school scene with the three girls also works even with all the greenery surrounding them in the better off Hollywood location. It always just struck me as the secure looking artifice of middle class suburbia that was about to be disturbed by the Shape.

I think the movie benefits from not being overly production designed. As Mark Gattis described it, it effortlessly made our ordinarily lives seem cinematic. The architecture didn't need to be seasonally or geographically specific. Just in the right zone of familiarity. The movie doesn't make a big deal about its geography either. It could be anywhere. It's nominally in the mid-west just because it makes people think of the middle. Average.

Will there be a non-collectors edition without the slip (I don't need slips)? Just wondering if I should wait for a price drop or not.

I’m pretty sure the scenes with the three girls walking home were shot in South Pasadena. It’s the nighttime stuff that was shot in Hollywood.

It's a box more than a slip. I seem to remember seeing that the first run will get a slip box and the next run will either have a regular slip or not at all.

It'll probably happen but it'll probably be 6 months to a year before you see it and it'll probably still be $19. You're only going to save $5 or so.

I've since lost the eBay link because they were too expensive for me to order with the international shipping (shipping was more than the item!). Maybe that person can chime in with the link again.

It's good enough for me!

Here's what the SC3 steelbook protector looks like on them (might need to crease it a bit more). Weirdly part 3 was a tight fit but that might be my copy since the halloween slips were sometimes at a little bit of an angle instead of flat at the top.

It seems normal even on my copies I have cased, a couple of them are way tighter than the others, so these box dimensions drift a touch.
