When I go to play this movie, starting at the beginning, the screen is almost completely black (sound is normal). You can see the faintest impression of the Warner Bros. logo on the screen. You have to be looking hard to even notice this, at first glance it appears to just be a black screen. As the movie keeps playing, the blackness continues and does not go away. However, if I start rewinding or fast forwarding, the picture instantly appears and looks completely normal, and quite good in fact. It's only when trying to play it normally (or pausing) that the screen is almost entirely black. This is why it doesn't seem to me like it could be an issue with the TV or the disc. What's even weirder is that not every scene is like this. If I scene skip (or select scene from the menu) to the 4th selectable scene, the picture looks entirely normal. If I then rewind to somewhere in the 3rd scene and press play, I can actually watch the 3rd scene and it looks ok (even though if I scene select the 3rd scene directly I get the black screen). But rewinding back even further doesn't work. No matter what I try, I can't get the 1st or 2nd scenes to be anything but a black screen (unless I'm actively rewinding or fast forwarding at the time). If I watch from the 4th scene on, the picture is normal for a while but goes back to a black screen after a few minutes.

I'm using an Oppo UDP-203 and was able to "fix" the problem by changing the HDR setting from auto to forced which results in HDR10 instead of Dolby Vision. I can play my other Dolby Vision disc (Cabin in the Woods) just fine though. I'm on the latest firmware and also tried a factory reset (and did not restore my settings) but that didn't do anything. I can only watch the (entire) movie on the UHD by disabling Dolby Vision in this manner.

The disc visually appears flawless. My HDMI cable is premium certified. My TV is an LG Oled 2016 C6. But I'm not sure how any of those could be the culprit if I get a perfect picture while rewinding or fast forwarding. On the other hand, if one else has this issue, it wouldn't seem to be a problem with the player in general either.

Well the chance that it's a disc issue appears to be dwindling. I got a replacement from Amazon but it has the exact same problem in the exact same spots.

I also don't understand how it can be a disc issues as the video information as obviously on there and the player can pull it off just fine and display it perfectly in dolby vision...just when it's rewinding and fast forwarding only. Not when you're trying to "play" the problem scenes. Then it's a black screen.

I also updated to the new beta firmware for the Oppo player but it made no difference.

Can anyone confirm they watched this in Dolby Vision with an Oppo with updated firmware (or the beta firmware) and had no issues? And if so, did you get it from Amazon or somewhere else?

I posted that i had the same problem when watching this disk over in the oppo 203 thread. I had to force HDR in the oppo to watch it or i would get the black screen in DV but could see it when rewinding it etc. I hope they release a firmware update to fix the issue but this is the only disk i have this problem with.

I just put my copy in and I do not have this issue. Oppo 203 with LG C6 displaying in DV. My disc came from Best Buy (steelbook). My firmware information is UDP20X-54-1127 (if that helps).

I bought my copy from someone on here but it plays fine in HDR and still looks good so I am not to concerned about it.

No, digital. Like Kong it was shot with a certain type of lens called 'anamorphic' which has those fuzzy corners and whatnot.

I saw a $25 used copy at Amoeba yesterday but passed. Don't feel like paying more than $20 for this, especially if there's a double-dip coming up.

Good and creepy flick, excellent PQ with nice HDR at points, and rumbling LFE.

I rented the blu ray, and really enjoyed the film. I thought the picture and audio were fantastic on the blu ray, so I have confidence in the 4K disc looking great as well. I just hope it goes on sale soon.

I advice you.

"The Dark Tower" is best of the picture from DV approved and make by Sony approved 4K filmed on UHD disc! In Atmos Dolby audio soundtrack.

It is. Very dimensional, excellent blacks, and daytime HDR looks lovely They also have a nice use of HDR highlights against the blacks in dark scenes.

As dimensional as this was in 2D on an OLED, I can't image what it would have been like shot in 3D on an OLED.
