Maybe people like the gritty, overblown look perhaps. But I think the new color timing and scan are amazing. |

I just finished watching the UHD for the first time. I love this film...always have and always will. I still have the 2-disc soundtrack which is filled with excellent music from the 50s-70s. I held off on purchasing the 2018 release because it seemed to be a mix bag.
Not too sure how I feel now that I have finally watched the 25th anniversary. It's DNR-wax city with the majority of the film grain scrubbed out. I'll be watching the remastered Blu to see how that compares. I found the Atmos track to be unremarkable as well, given that it has such a seller soundtrack. The Vietnam sequence did not rock my setup as I expected it would with the napalm drop. The $10 price point is still a bargain for the most part I just found the transfer to be consistently inconsistent. This release deserved better, but I don't think we'll get anything superior to this for a good while. ![]() |

Can anyone please tell me if the 25th Anniversary is the same transfer as the previous 4k release? Its going very cheap at the moment. I bought it already but thought to ask if its same or different transfer since they re released it.

I originally saw the Forrest Gump movie back in 1994. This movie had a budget of $55 million dollars and box office sells were $678.2 million dollars. The 1994 Forrest Gump movie is based on the fictional Forrest Gump book. Sometimes books are better then the movie and sometimes movies are much better than the book (Its not possible to have the movie exactly the same as the book but very close). While I have not personally taken the time to read the Forrest Gump book myself, according to the extra features for the movie and other sources, many people believe the movie is better than the book. While I do not agree with Tom Hanks personal politics in real life, Tom Hanks is an excellent actor and did an outstanding job playing the fictional character Forrest Gump. There are many movies that Tom Hanks has done an outstanding job when it comes to acting.
Forrest Gump was released on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format on June 12th 2018 and then released again on May 7th 2019 using the exact same discs but different style of packaging (due to limitations in my equipment the native 4K movie was downscaled to 1080P and the lossless 13.1 Dolby Atmos soundtrack was also downscaled to 7.1 Dolby TrueHD. But that is an issue with my old equipment only and not the discs). Also flawless playback occurred on the 100GB disc even while doing a reverse scan several times on my year 2016 OPPO UDP-203. The Blu-ray disc packaging contains total of 3 Blu-ray discs (One BD-100, and 2 BD-50’s). A total of 92.4GB is used on the triple layer 100GB disc. For the two BD-50 discs disc 1 uses 45.4GB and disc 2 uses 44.4GB. The BD-100 disc contains two interesting audio commentary tracks that have a Dolby Prologic matrix flag. While the first BD-50 disc has the exact same two audio commentary tracks, that first BD-50 disc does contain the Musical Signposts to History which was interesting to watch. The third Blu-ray disc (the second BD-50 disc) contains several more hours worth of bonus material that is very interesting. ***Spoiler alert for those that have not seen the movie*** Many people in real life have had a Forrest Gump moment in their life at least once. The fictional Forrest Gump character has a low IQ level and is below the intelligent level of the average human being. However, during the movie, one learns that Forrest Gump while having a low IQ in some areas of human reasoning and knowledge, has expert intelligence and talent in many other areas. The fictional character Forrest Gump becomes an expert ping pong player, super fast runner, the ideal solider, and war hero that saved the lives of many soldiers. Forrest Gump also becomes a very wealthy man with his business decisions and investments with the help of his friends. Forrest Gump is also innocent like a child, and has a lot of humanity, and Forrest is the ultimate family man. While this is a fictional movie there is a lot of negative history mixed in with history of the late 20th Century. Forrest Gump is a classic fictional movie that has some family values mixed in with sad events that have occurred in history. This is an ideal movie forever one. It is too bad more people in real life are not like Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump was more intelligent when compared to most people in the world. Just watch the movie and look at everything he accomplished in life with a love for other people regardless of their skin color, social status, etc. While Forrest Gump is a fictional character there are people in real life that are similar to Forrest Gump. Just because some intelligent test claims a person has a low IQ level in certain areas, does not mean that person is stupid or a bad person. Again, the world would be a better place if there were more people like Forrest Gump. Last edited by HDTV1080P; 01-18-2022 at 03:06 AM. |

It's not bad and better on the non effects shots than the Blu-ray, but some of the issues come down to the many early vintage digital effects filmouts that Paramount tried to finagle and massage, and didn't help things in the process.

Just picked this up at the local Best Buy. Still had a slipcase after all this time, and in good shape.
Upon 2nd inspection I suspect a re-seal. I will hold off on opening it. Should this had come with a label on the top of the case that would need to be peeled off? It's missing, and the shrinkwrap looks kinda funny. Last edited by cupboy; 05-17-2022 at 12:20 AM. |

Oof, if this is the last ever physical edition of Gump it’s a pretty sorry send off. It borders on a DNR disaster, not unlike Jurassic Park.
Is it possible that UHD would make the visual effects shots looks unflattering and so they try to hide the imperfections by slathering the whole film in wax? Such a shame because Gump is an amazing film. Spielberg might be the king of set pieces but few filmmakers can tell a complete story like Zemeckis. Every shot, performance, edit, gag is just perfect and it all comes together in an emotionally satisfying way. It’s hard to pinpoint why Gump works so well, it’s a strange film in which a slow guy traverses the latter half of the 20th Century and accidentally inserts himself into major events. An unusual proposition. The film is pitched very well, for all of Forest’s innocence there’s real darkness and tragedy in the life of Jenny. A sexually abused child is doomed from the start and her life is a downward spiral of sex, drugs, suicidal ideation and eventual death from AIDS. Jenny’s evil father sealed her fate, just as Forest’s loving mother launched his charmed life. Some people say the film is ‘depressing’ but I never felt that. Forest faces loss after loss but he also gains in many ways, and seeing a simpleton coast through life on good nature while ‘intelligent’ cynics around him flounder is somehow refreshing. His absence of ego seems to connect him to nature and the universe. Apparently the book isn’t nearly as good, so the screenwriters and Zemeckis did something amazing. They found something strange but true in the story and turned it into a genuine classic film, stuffed with iconic moments. It really warranted a better UHD. |

If it wasn't so damn yellow and the colors weren't ruined to me, I would love that 4K. The detail in the image is much better. The being so dark looking, and overly warm/yellow tinted ruins it for me though. |

It's not dark. That's the HDR to SDR conversion you're seeing.

I just finished watching Forrest Gump on 4K U.H.D. and I thought that it looked excellent. There are a few soft shots here and there -- probably due to the WAY that the film was captured. All in all, I think that the 4K transfer is a solid one -- 8/10. The bad reviews on this site turned me away, but I am glad to own it on 4K. (I felt the same about Goodfellas: The official review dissuaded me from purchasing the 4K, but Goodfellas looks EXCELLENT on 4K.)
